In this thesis, based on previous studies, the author combined Searle’s speech act theory, Grice’s cooperative principle and Leech’s politeness principle to analyze vagueness in A Dream of Red Mansions. This thesis argues that, in the dialogue, the speaker can use the illocutionary act and illocutionary force generated by vagueness to express his real intention. As can be seen from the analysis, vagueness with the combination of cooperative principle and its conversational maxims can be used as an effective method to adjust the conflicts between the characters in the novel, to help ease atmosphere and promote feelings, and can make readers fully understand the characters in the image and their personality sculptured by the author. The violations of the cooperative principle could be explained as due to special circumstances the speaker deliberately chooses obscure expression to convey his true thoughts. The author hopes this study could be used for reference to people’s daily communication, making the daily interaction more harmonious in realistic communication. |
