This translation report starts from the abridged translation practice of the novel One Day in order to study the application of foreignization and domestication in literary translation, especially in novel translation. On that basis, this thesis tries to pose that the relation of the two translation strategies is not only a complimentary relationship, but also a subordinative compound relationship. One Day is written by David Nicholls, a famous screenwriter and best-seller writer in the UK. The words translated reach to eighteen thousand. Through the translation of this novel, this thesis intends to make the domestic readers to understand the British culture and at the same time think their growing process cross times and nations in order to appreciate the reality of life. Through the abridged translation practice of the novel One Day, the thesis makes an analysis on translation difficulties of the characters’language and actions and cultural factors so as to prove the practicability and application value of the translation strategy which emphasizes on foreignization and at the same time uses domestication as a supplement. The translation difficulties of the characters’portraiture are from four prospects, such as the translation of the dialogues, the translation of the actions, the translation of the portrait and the translation of the psychological description; and the translation difficulties of cultural factors are analyzed into two parts which are related to substances cultural and socio-cultural translation. The author makes a conclusion which is the enlightenment obtained during the translation practice and the questions and handle the difficulties left after the translation is over. The innovation of this thesis is that the research work on the two translation strategies of foreignization and domestication is based on the author’s own practice in translation. Most of the previous researches either analyze other people’s translations or compare the different translation strategies adopted by two different translators. However, in this thesis, the author’s research object is the translation practice of herself. Thus, the research work is more specific and suggestive. So this thesis further confirms the translation strategy which emphasize foreignization and at the same time uses domestication as a supplement. On the one hand, this thesis aims to make contributions to the literary translation studies especially for the novel translation practice; on the other hand this thesis provides certain reference for the novel One Day, and also provides research materials for world literature communication.
