As a multiethnic region dominated by Mongolian people living together with nationalities of Han, Manchu, Elenchun, Daur, Ewenke and Korean etc., Inner Mongolia has always been well-known as the land of songs and dances. Therein, a new form of folk songs has taken shape over hundreds years of evolution since the nomadic culture was encountered, interacted and fused with the Han-oriented agrarian culture which was brought into Mongolian grassland by the immigrants from Shanxi and Shaanxi as the main source and other places such as Gansu, Ningxia, Hebei, Shandong etc, with a small number in Ming Dynasty and large number in Qing Dynasty. This present study starts from a recount of the social practice which was carried out by the immigrants form Shanxi and Shaanxi when they tramped, for a living, through Xikou to the west of Inner Mongolia, north of the Great Wall. It then reviews the effect of the practice on the agriculture and commerce, especially on arts. Based on the exploration of the internal relationship between the nomadic culture and immigration culture, the thesis sets about examining the creation style, acting features and its origin relation with the indigenous dances of Shanxi and Shaanxi, and investigating how to stimulate and advance this new form of folk songs, from multiple perspectives of ecology, musicology, artistic anthropology, artistic aesthetics, history, dialectology, humanities etc. An exhaustive demonstration of the influence of folk music in Shanxi and Shaanxi on the song creation in the west of Inner Mongolia not only has great theoretical significance in dialectology but also has practical significance in the creation of different styles of songs.Chapter One of this thesis examines the influences of the culture and background of immigration from Shanxi and Shaanxi on the local fork songs. Chapter Two provides a detailed introduction to the song composers and their works. Chapter Three lays a stress onthe analysis of the indigenous music style and genre in Shanxi and Shaanxi. Chapter Four focuses on the influence of indigenous songs on the categories of the song creation in Hetao area of Inner Mongolia and their singing styles. The last part serves as the conclusion of the whole thesis.
