C-E Translation Of News Headlines From The Perspective Of Eco-Translatology

In the background of political, economical and cultural globalization, the international communication becomes more and more important. We not only focus on helping Chinese people know the world, but also make it easier for people from the other countries in the world get to know China. News report, as one of the important approaches of foreign exchange, includes information of the developing trends, the latest situation, the significant achievements, the current events and so on of China. News report in English is the major means for the world to get to know China. Therefore, news translation becomes very important. News headline, as the soul of news, is the indispensable part of the news report. Its translation is particularly important. It should not only attract the readers, but also refine news to adapt to the limited space of the newspaper. News headline translation must be concise, accurate and attractive.In recent years, researchers in China have conducted studies on the features and translation strategies of news headlines from different perspectives of Functionalism, Skopostheorie, Adaptation, Relevance Theory, and so on. However, many the studies have been focused on the E-C news headline translation. A few people have studied the translation of Chinese news headline into English, but they have rarely dealt with the restriction and active function of the translator in the translational eco-environment which is made of multiple factors.On the basis of previous studies, the present author adopts the method of qualitative description and tries to apply the theory of translation as a process of Adaptation and Selection from the perspective of Eco-translatology to analyze the process and strategies of C-E news headline translation. The author believes that if the translator or the target text is to survive or exist for long, he/she or it should adapt to the translational eco-environment of news and he/she should make adaptive selections according to the requirements and restrictions of different factors in the translational eco-environment of news.The process of C-E news headline translation can be divided into two stages in terms of Eco-translatology. One is the translator’s adaptation to the translational eco-environment of news which includes the target language, the target culture, the target readers, the intention of news headline translation, and so on. The other is the translator’s adaptive selection, that is, the translator makes adaptive selections from the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions in the translational eco-environment of news. The linguistic dimension involves the translator’s adaptive selection at lexical, syntactical, rhetorical, and structural levels. The cultural dimension contains the translator’s adaptive selection to cultural-loaded words, idioms, allusions, couplets and so on. The communicative dimension refers to the translator’s adaptive selection in the achievement of communicative intensions, such as, omitting the subordinate information and adding the supplementary information. Literal translation and free translation are the specific means to be adopted by the translator to do C-E translation of news headlines.It is found that the theory of Eco-translatology can be used to guide C-E translation practice of news headlines. In the translating process, the translator’s adaptation to and adaptive selection in the translational eco-environment of news can not only enhance the translator’s cognition of translation of news headlines but also raise the general quality of the translator and the quality of translation product. This research may contribute the construction of translation theories in terms of news translation.
