A Study On The Chinese Translation Of Vague Language In Business English Under Frame Networks Of Conceptual Blending Theory

Translation is the result of communication between people from different regions. Thestudy on translation has never stopped and a considerable number of theories about translationhave been put forwards. For a long time, the studies on translation theories have been focuson the static comparisons from the aspects of linguistic forms, literary styles and so on. After1990s, the studies exploring the process of translation from the psychological or cognitiveview have been carried out. Among these theories, conceptual blending theory as a branch ofcognitive linguistics makes great efforts to study the mental process of translation.According to conceptual blending theory, when people do cognitive activities, there is aprocess of blending based in their minds and the cognitive actives are the result of mentalspaces integration. Translation is one kind of cognitive activities, so the process of translationcan be studied basing on this theory. The process of translating includes four spaces: input1space (source text), input2space (translator’s mental space), a generic space and a blendspace (target text). The basic frame networks of CBT are: single-frame networks, a framenetwork, one-sided networks and two-sided networks. In the translating process, the translatoras the subject of blending involves in every step and guides the translation in operating.Having strong social power, in recent years, business English grows into a relativelyindependent discipline as the result of trading activities extended into international arena.Vague language as an essential feature of language plays a fundamental role in businessEnglish and draws great attention from the linguistics and scholars in recent years. Lots ofvaluable studies have been made from the view of translation methodology. Different fromthe most translation studies, this thesis explores the mental process of translation because it isthe foundation for the further study of translation methodology. From the study of this thesis,it proves that the translator as the subject of conceptual blending process plays a leading rolein the projections between four spaces. Whether in any form of frame networks, in the processof projection, translator is like a director to build the conceptual structures separately from thesource text and the translator mental space then select one frame of them as the organizingframe of the blend. During the blending process, the translator also employs theirbackground knowledge to make the operation of blending run smoothly, i.e. to make thetranslation text more acceptable to the target language readers.This thesis proves that: in the whole translating course of cognitive integration, the translator plays an important roll all the way. Especially in the blend space, the creativity andthe dominance of the translator are best demonstrated. The practical value of this thesis lies in:Exploring the translating process of vague language in business English, we could betterconvey the intention of the speaker to the target language reader and promote further study ofthe translating strategy because the translating mental process lays the foundation oftranslating methods.
