Self-handicapping, a kind of self-esteem protecting strategy, enables individual to avoid the failure by constructing obstacles to successful performance and escaping from ability attribution when individual in the situation connected with their ability evaluation. Especially, along with the unceasing development of self-awareness for junior students, self-handicapping strategy became most important factor affecting students’academic development. But there are quite many domestic researches draw conclusions by means of overseas measuring tool, and most researches just focus on self-handicapping’general condition.According to the theory of self value, this study aims to understand China’s junior high school students’self-handicapping, through using the different condition to set up different evaluation situation, and combined with the locus of control and level of self-esteem to explain the characteristics and functions of the three different self-handicapping strategy. It provide the new visual angle for education workers to look at low student achievement and point to we should take effective intervention measures for different types of students and set up the correct study view in order to improve China’s junior high school students’academic performance and healthy development.The first study based on the theory of self-handicapping, combining domestic and foreign related research, in interviews on the base of the middle school students are open questionnaire survey, and through the exploratory factor analysis and verification factor analysis, compiled the middle school students’self-handicapping questionnaire which has good reliability and validity. It can be as a effective tool to measure the junior school students’self-handicapping.The second study is that486junior students has been selected to finish the corresponding questionnaire to explore the relationship among different evaluation situation, locus of control, level of self-esteem and self-handicapping. The next study deeply discuss the influence path of different evaluation situation, locus of control and the level of self-esteem to self-handicapping.the conclusions are as follows:(1) the junior high school students’ self-handicapping questionnaire can be divided into seek explanations, reduce the effort and exalt others three dimension.(2) There is significant difference of self-handicapping among the different evaluation situation, locus of control and the level of self-esteem for junior school students as well as in gender and grade. The boys have the higher score than girls in self-handicapping, and higher grade students havehigher score than low grade students. In addition, students have the highest self-handicapping score in the peer evaluation situation; Exteral control type students use more self-handicapping stratgy than internal control type students; The low self-esteem students use more self-handicapping stratgy than high self-esteem students.(3) There is significant correlation between the self-handicapping and the predictive variables. Their have different prediction effect and influence of the path for the locus of control and the level of self-esteem to seek explanations, reduce the effort and exalt others and self-handicapping total score under different evaluation situation.
