Objective: To investigate the feasibility and sensitivity of Montreal CognitiveAssessment(MoCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) in the evaluation ofcognitive dysfunction in patients with chronic alcoholism(CA).Methods:The cognitive function of40patients with CA(CA group) and30healthypeople(control group) were evaluated by MoCA and MMSE.Results:1.No statistical difference was found in the baseline characteristics of subjectsin CA group and control group, including gender, age, smoking, hypertensive disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, heart disease history, transient ischemic attack and familyhistory in cardio-cerebrovascular disease. However, the cognitive function of controlsubjects and CA patients evaluated by MoCA were scored as27.20±0.78and25.20±1.22with statistical difference. The significant difference also found in scores of bothgroups assessed by MMSE (27.97±0.89in control vs25.86±1.39in CA group)2. Thescores of CA patients regarding to the visual space, memory and reaction abilities were3.85±0.59,4.43±0.82and3.82±0.76, respectively. These scores were significantlower those corresponding data from control subjects (P<0.01).Conclusion:The combined applications of MoCA and MMSE are beneficial to findthe MCI of CA patients in the early stage. Compared to MMSE, MoCA is a preferabletool to evaluate the local cognitive domain impairment. Thus, MoCA score can provide an evidence for early finding, preventing and treating the cognitive impairment inpatients with CA.
