Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a paineducation program on pain intensity, beliefs of patients with cancer pain and the qualityof cancer patient’s life.Methods The study was conducted in the oncology chemotherapy ward of a Anhuiprovince grade3and first-class hospital.119patients with cancer pain were divided asexperimental group and control group according to the patients’ room number.The61patients in the control group were given general health education by the ward nurses,while the58patients in the experimental group were given pain education program byresearch nurses. At the start of this study, two groups of patients were investigated byGeneral Information Questionnaire, Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and quality life ofcancer patient questionnaire, which is used to do the survey of the quality score ofcancer patient’s life by using12index of evaluation of the quality life of cancer patient.After the completion of pain education program, two groups of patients were measuredby American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire Modified(APS-POQ-Modified) and quality life of cancer patient questionnaire. SPSS16.0isused to analysis the data, and the methods of statistics are prevalence study, t test andchi-square test. The pain intensity, pain beliefs, patient satisfaction with medical staffand score of quality life of two groups were compared.Results⑴After the implementation of pain education program, pain scores of experimental group (2.10±1.41) and control group (2.30±1.37) were significant reduce(P <0.05).⑵After the implementation of pain education program, the satisfactionwith pain control (3.82±0.10) and nurses (3.93±0.65) were significant improvecompared with the control group (4.32±0.72,4.54±0.76)(P <0.05). The patientsatisfaction with doctors was better in both groups (P>0.05).⑶The pain beliefsscores of experimental group (1.59±0.60) were significant promoted compared withthe control group (2.49±0.71)(P <0.05).⑷After intervention, the average score ofquality of cancer patient life in experimental group (44.36±1.45) were improvecompared with the control group (40.28±1.78)(P <0.05).Conclusion It is a better way to carry out the pain education program for cancer patientsand their family. Cancer patients should be empowered with pain managementeducation to gain knowledge and correct misconceptions in managing their cancer pain.Pain education program for cancer pain patients can improve effect of cancer painmanagement. The pain education program combined with the cancer pain educationhandbook, can improve pain therapy outcome, reduce pain intensity, improve patientsatisfaction with pain management, and improve the quality of cancer patients’ life.
