Objective:To evaluate the use of heterogeneous acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as an interpositional graft prevention of Frey’s Syndrome after parotidectomy.Method:This study includes a total of161patients, they were divided into two groups:the first(blank control n=87)had superficial, partial or total parotidectomy alone, and the second(implanted ADM group n=74),had superficial, partial or total parotidectomy with simultaneous placement of an ADM graft between the residual parotid tissues and the parotideomasseteric facial flap. All the161patients were evaluated for gustatory sweating by questionnaire investigation. For objective assessment,80patients(40from each group)were randomly selected for a Minor’s starch-iodine test. SPPS19.0software was used for Chi-square test. Results:Subjectively Frey’s Syndrome was recorded in36patients (41.38%)from the blank controls and15patients(20.27%)from the ADM group. Objectively Frey’s Syndrome was found in21patients from the control group(52.5%) and10patients from the ADM group(25.0%).Both differences were P<0.05,and there was no significant differences among partial parotidectomy, superficial parotidectomy and total parotidectomy (All differences were P>0.05). Postoperative complications (local itching and generalized pain) was recorded in4patients (4.60%)from the blank controls and53patients(71.62%)from the ADM group, differences was P<0.05.Conclusions:The use of heterogeneous acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as an interpositional graft could be an effective way in prevention of Frey’s Syndrome after parotidectomy at least3years. However,it may also cause some postoperative complications such as local itching and generalized pain.
