Objective1. The subjective assessment of masticatory function and the qualityof life before and after the fixed partial denture restoration weremeasured by IED and OIDP scale. The objective evaluation ofmasticatory function was measured by the chewing efficiency throughthe laboratory method. The fixed partial denture were assessed by bothsubjective and objective methods.2. To assess an association between objective and subjectiveevaluation and explore whether the scale questionnaire can replace themasticator efficiency test and clinical examination and make themsimple.Methods53outpatients who came to visit dentist for fixed denture restorationduring July2012to July2013at Guangxi Medical University DentalHospital were selected. The Patients had a face-to-face interview bystructure questionnaire before the restoration,3months after therestoration and6months after the restoration. Patients had oral clinicalexamination, chewing efficiency measurement and questionnaire atdifferent times. The Patients had a clinical dental examination and laboratory test or masticatory efficiency before the restoration, after therestoration,3months after the restoration and6months after therestoration. The questionnaire includes general information,self-evaluation of general health status, oral health, IED and oral OIDP.The Patients had a clinical dental examination and laboratory test ormasticatory efficiency before the restoration, after the restoration,3months after the restoration and6months after the restoration. The oralhealth examination included dentition conditions, periodontal status, occlusal condition. The analysis was carried out by the StatisticalPackage For Social Sciences (SPSS16.0). There were three stages in dataanalysis. Firstly, descriptive analysis was conducted to self-evaluation ofgeneral health status, IED, oral OIDP, oral health status and laboratorytest or masticatory efficiency before the restoration,3months after therestoration and6months after the restoration. Secondly, Chi-square testwas used to investigate related factors of IED before and after therestoration. Wilcoxon rank sum test and Kruskal-Wallis rank sum testanalysis the related factors of OIDP before and after the restoration.Thirdly, Spearman correlation analysis was used to analysis the oralhealth status, the result of chewing efficiency measurement, IED scoreand OIDP scores.Results1. Before restoration,3months after the restoration and6monthsafter the restoration, patients with "difficult" in GED,"unsatisfactory"in DAC had higher IED than those "no difficulty" in GED,"satisfaction"in DAC, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). Beforethe rehabilitation, self-assessment of oral health as "poor" group were less satisfaction than the self-assessment of oral health as "good" group, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). Before and after therehabilitation, the patient’s self-assessment levels, self-assessment ofhealth and self-assessment of oral health self-assessment had relationshipwith the ability to chew. The higher levels of self-assessment, healthself-assessment and oral health self-assessment had better ability to chew, but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).2、After the restoration IED and OIDP had decreased than beforethe restoration, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05);although IED and OIDP of six months after the repair had declined thanthe first three months, but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05). After the restoration the results of chewing efficiency werebetter than before the repair, the difference was statistically significant(P <0.05). There were no difference between the results of laboratorychewing efficiency before the restoration and the immediately resultafter the repair, and between3months after repair and six months afterrepair in (P>0.05).3、Before and after the treatment, with the increase of IED, theOIDP also increased; and masticatory efficiency decreased (all P <0.05).IED, OIDP, and masticatory efficiency, showed a negatively correlationbefore and after the rehabilitation. IED and OIDP showed a positivecorrelation.ConclusionThe study found that IED and OIDP laboratory were negativelycorrelated with masticatory efficiency. It indicated that IED and OIDPscale questionnaires effectively showed that the function of the fixed denture prosthesis, so they could replace or partially replace laboratorychewing efficiency and provide good scientific basises for creating asimple and effective evaluation system for the masticatory efficiency ofthe fixed denture prosthesis.
