Objective:This paper aims to compare the overall life quality of the patients who suffer from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and are treated by two different methods: maintenance hemodialysis or renal transplantation through36-Item Short-Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36). In addition, the life quality in different periods and their changes with time are also compared. The factors that affect the life quality are also analyzed from the following aspects:physical function (PF), role physical (RP), bodily pain (BP), general health (GH), vitality (VT), social function (SF), role emotional (RE), mental health (MH). Valuable information and standard are provided for the treatment of the patients.Data and methods:The following two tables are used:1. general condition questionnaire:including demographic data;2.36-Item Short-Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36). The survey is conducted through questionnaire and telephone follow-up. Those patients that cannot fill the tables due to education level and physical condition are helped by their children or the medical workers. The t-test, variance analysis multiple stepwise regression analysis of data are processed by SPSS17.0.Main outcome measures:Calculate the outcome of each dimension of the SF-36and compare: 1. The overall life quality of the maintenance hemodialysis patients and renal transplant patients;2. The life quality of different period of the maintenance hemodialysis patients and renal transplant patients;3. The vertical variation of the maintenance hemodialysis patients;4. The vertical variation of the renal transplant patients;5. The correlation factors analysis of the maintenance hemodialysis patients and renal transplant patients.Results:1. The demographic characteristics difference is not significant;2. The scores of the maintenance hemodialysis patients in the SF-36are all lower than that of the renal transplant patients;3. The scores of the renal transplant recipients in the SF-36in6months,1year,2years treatment are obviously higher that of the maintenance hemodialysis patients (p<0.05). The comparison of the patients in more than3years is statistical significance (p<0.05) in the dimensions except the one BP.4. That factors that affect the patients’ life quality are age, marital status, family and social relation, family economic status, sleep quality, hemodialysis time and education.Conclusion:1. Those two treatments can both effectively improve the patients’ life quality. The overall life quality of the renal transplant recipients is better than that of the maintenance hemodialysis patients. In different period, the maintenance hemodialysis patients’ life qualities are lower than that of the renal transplant recipients in the treatment period of6months-1year,1-3years, more than3years. 2. As the treatment time goes on, the life quality of the maintenance hemodialysis patients decrease. The life qualities of the renal transplant recipients in their1-3years of treatment are higher than that of maintenance hemodialysis patients in their6months-1years and more than3years of treatment.5. The factors both affect the life quality of the maintenance hemodialysis patients and the renal transplant recipients are:age, marital status, family and social relation, family economic status, sleep quality, hemodialysis/transplant time and education.
