ObjectivesTo explore the influence of telephone intervention on the stoma self-care agency of patients with urinary stoma find the existing problems of health education in hospitals, provide theoretical and empirical reference of targeting interventions for nurses and finally to extend the utilization of this transitional care service.MethodsConvenience sampling was used to select80inpatiens from one tertiary grade-A hospital from October2012to February2014. Participants were divided into experimental group and control group by random number, with40patients for each group. They were both assessed on the stoma self-care agency at the time of discharge. After discharge, patients of experimental group were given individualized health education on telephone three times (one week, one month and three months after discharge). Assessment on self-care agency was also included each time when implementing telephone follow-up. On the contrary, patients of control group were only assessed on their stoma self-care agency three months after discharge. SPSS17.0statistical software was used for descriptive analysis, χ2test, two-sample t-test and paired t-test. P<0.05was statistically significant. ResultsTotally six patients were excluded for different reasons:four patients being lost in contact and two patients being readmitted to hospital within three months, which left37patients for each group. There were no significant difference in age, gender, education, marriage, monthly income, medical cost, place of residence, types of surgery between the experimental group and the control group (P>0.05).Degree of stoma self-care three months after discharge was better than that of discharge for patients of the control group. Results of stoma self-care degree for the experimental group were as follows:there was no significant difference in stoma self-care degree one week after discharge when compared to that of discharge; patients’ stoma self-care degree one month and three months after discharge were better than that of discharge; patients’ stoma self-care degree three months after discharge were better than that of one month. There was no significant difference in degree of stoma self-care at the time of discharge between experimental group and control group. Degree of stoma self-care three months after discharge of experimental group was better than that of control group. There was no significant difference in scores of stoma self-care agency between experimental group and control group at the time of discharge. Three months after discharge, stoma self-care agency scores of experimental group were much higher than that of control group. Total scores of stoma self-care agency increased with time for patients of both groups.ConclusionsTelephone follow-up made by specialized nurses of urology at the early stage after stoma surgery can enhance the stoma self-care agency of patients. In the lack of stoma outpatient, telephone follow-up is one of the effective, inexpensive and easy stoma transitional care services.
