Objective Through measuring the thickness of transverse atlantal ligament tubercles in different age groups on HRCT to explore its change rule in different gender, different sides and different age groups, and then analyze its influencing factors.Methods291cervical HRCT images were randomly selected from January1,2013to November31,2013, these patients had taken cervical or sinus CT examinations, On cross section bilateral transverse atlantal ligament tubercles’thickness were measured three times every cases, the mean values were calculated and recorded, using statistical software to analyze the statistical difference of bilateral transverse atlantal ligament tubercles’thickness in patients’age, gender and side. The average values of thickness were token in different age groups, and the change rules of thickness values were analyzed along with age, and to find the significant difference between the mean values.Results291patients were included in the study during the period from January1,2013to November31,2013, who had token cervical vertebra or sinus CT examinations. Patients with trauma, tumor and other factors that unilateral or bilateral transverse atlantal ligament tubercles couldn’t be measured were excluded. There were148males,143females, aged from1month to83years old, we divided them into8age groups,0to10years old (n=58),11to20years old (n=52),21to30years old (n=36),31to40years old (n=24),41to50years old (n=35),51to60years old(n=31), 61to70years old (n=32),71to90years old(n=23). Using SPSS19.0statistical software included the paired sample T test, independent sample T test and single factor variance analysis of ANOVA and other statistical methods for statistical analysis of the above data. The results showed:1. The average thickness of the left transverse atlantal ligament tubercles was0.2680±0.15803cm, the right is0.2682±0.15447cm, there was no significant difference between them(t=0.061p=0.951>0.05);2. The average thickness of left transverse atlantal ligament tubercles in male was0.2635±0.16532cm, and0.2727±0.15054cm in female. The right was0.2618±0.16442cm in male and0.2750±0.14371cm in female respectively. Both men and women showed no significant difference (p=0.620>0.05, left t=0.497, right t=0.730, p=0.466>0.05);3.0to10years old (n=58), the mean value of the left is0.0441±0.09007cm,11to2o years old (n=52), the mean value of the left is0.363±0.09429cm,21to30years old (n=36), the mean value of the left is0.2744±0.09779cm,31to40years old (n=24), the mean value of the left is0.3192±0.08345cm,41to50years old (n=35), the mean value of the left is0.3371±0.10690cm,51to60years old (n=31), the mean value of the left is0.3768±0.10196cm,61to70years old (n=32), the mean value of the left is0.3938±0.06973cm,71to90years old (n=23), the mean value of the left is0.4143±0.13889cm, The average thickness values of the left transverse ligament tubercles were significantly different between groups(F=68.567, p=0.000<0.05), and the average thickness values of the right transverse ligament tubercles were significantly different between groups (F=71.904, p=0.000<0.05).The comparison between any two means were as follows:group of0to10years old and the other7groups were significantly different (p=0.000); there was no significant difference between group of11to20years old and21to30years old (p>0.05), and the other6groups had significant difference (p<0.05); there was no significant difference among group of21to30years old and group of11to20years old, group of31to40years old (p>0.05), and the other5groups had significant difference (p<0.05); there was no significant difference among group of31to40years old and group of21to30years old, group of41to50years old (p>0.05), and the other5groups had significant difference (p<0.05); there was no significant difference among group of41to50years old and group of31to40years old, group of51to60years old (p>0.05), and the other5groups had significant difference (p<0.05); there was no significant difference among group of51to60years old and group of41to50years old, group of61to70years old (p>0.05), and the other4groups had significant difference (p<0.05); there was no significant difference among group of61to70years old and group of51to60years old, group of71to90years old (p>0.05), and the other5groups had significant difference (p<0.05); there was no significant difference among group of71to90years old and the group of51to60years old, group of61to70years old (p>0.05), and the other5groups had significant difference (p<0.05); The right average transverse ligament tubercles thickness between groups had the same statistical difference as the left side;4. There were three CT performances of atlas lateral ligament tubercles:a, tubercles were almost low density, only cortical surface was high density, b, tubercles were almost high density, c, high density and low density accounted for these tubercles, surface were high density. Conclusion No significant relationship between the thickness of transverse ligament of atlas tubercles and sex and side, the main influence factors is age, along with the age growth, the thickness is gradually increasing. The change rule is:increases along with age, remains constant till50years old:group of0to10years old is smaller than the other age groups, the thickness between group of0to10years old and the adjacent groups have no significant difference, but group of11to20years old is less than the group after21to30years old, group of21to30years old is less than the group after group of31to40years old, group of31to40years old is less than the group after group of41to50years old, group of41to50years old is less than the group after group of51to60years old, group of71to90years old is greater than the groups except group of51to60years old and group of61to70years old. In addition, congenital factor is also one of the influence factor.
