Objective:The purpose of this clinical study is to analysis characteristicsof infants with neonatal sepsis, including clinical manifestations, laboratoryexaminations and pathogenic bacteria. Methods: This retrospective study collected data from213neonates whohad documented in sepsis in The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi MedicalUniversity from January2011to December2013. For each case, we extracteddata of demographic characteristics, first presenting symptom, the principaldiagnosis, outcome and in-hospital fatality, laboratory parameters and prognosis. Results: Between2011and2013, there were213infants who haddocumented in sepsis.126(59.2%) cases had early-onset sepsis(EOS) during thestudy period and the average gestational age was37weeks.87(40.8%) infantsdeveloped late-onset sepsis(LOS) and the average gestational age was35weeks.The most common complications were pneumonia(53.1%), anemia(48.4%),electrolyte disturbance(36.6%). Compared to the LOS, more EOS infantsdeveloped gastrointestinal bleeding, and the LOS patients turned into bacterialmeningitis more frequently(P<0.05). The cultures of98infants were positive.Among them, there were40urine culture and35blood culture get positive results. A total of55(56.1%)samples were confirmed gram-positive organisms(G-),38(38.8%) samples were gram-negative bacillus(G+), and5(5.1%)samples were fungi. The major pathogen of neonatal sepsis was Klebsiellapneumoniae, followed by escherichia coli, coagulase-negative Staphylococci.121(56.8%) infants were cured,78(36.6%) infants were given up from thetherapy,14(6.6%) infants died. The prognosis of EOS was rather worse thanthe LOS(P<0.05).Conclusion: Most of neonates with sepsis were premature and low birthweight infants. Infants with sepsis had various clinical manifestations. However, temperature abnormity, jaundice and low response happened more frequently.EOS often occurred in1-3days after birth, but the LOS came about in8-10days.The prognosis of EOS was worse than the LOS, but the neonates who sufferedLOS spent more time in hospital. The most common pathogen is gram-positiveorganisms, and there is a growing trend of fungus and conditioned pathogens inneonatal sepsis.
