Purpose: To research the relation between the expressions of CD133andCD44in the primary gastric carcinoma (GC) with its impact on survival.Method: The expressions of CD133and CD44were examined byimmunohistochemistry (IHC) in50specimens of GC tissues.Result: The positivity rates of CD133and CD44in GC tissues were42%and44%, respectively. A positive correlation was found between theexpression of CD133and CD44(R=0.307). Positive patients had a higherrecurrence risk compared to the negative ones (P<0.05). Kaplan-Meieranalysis showed a significant difference in the survival rate betweenCD133-positive and CD133-negative patients (P<0.05) and betweenCD44-positive and CD44-negative patients; the patients with negativeexpression of CD133,CD44had a significantly longer survival than thosepositive. Cox regression analysis indicated that expressions of CD133andCD44were independent prognostic factors of GC (all P<0.05).Conclusion: The expressions of CD133and CD44are related to relapseand survival of GC, and their combined detection can be of important value in predicting the prognosis of GC.
