Objective: To explore the effects of the self-management education on self-efficacy andquality of life of patients with esophageal cancer. In order to offer the guidance for thepatients with esophageal cancer when carry out self-management education.Methods: A convenience sample of71patients with esophageal cancer from the FirstHospital of Ji Lin University were recruited from December2012to November2013.According to the random number table, the samples were experimental divided into twogroups: Control group (N=36) and Intervention group (N=35). The two groups both receivedusual nursing care, while intervention group was given self-management education,including disease knowledge, emotion management, catering management and complicationmanagement, et al. The strategies used by people to promote health scale (SUPPH) andCancer′s quality of life questionnaire (QLQ-C30) and the incidence of postoperativepulmonary complication were used to measure the patients’ self-efficacy and the quality oflife before and after intervention. Statistical analysis included x2test, t test andnonparametric test.Results:1. After intervention, compared the pulmonary complication rate, there was nodifference between the two groups (P<0.05).2. After intervention, compared the total scores of self-efficacy and its threedimension scores, there were significantly difference in intervention group(p<0.05). Therewere a significantly difference between the two groups in the total scores of self-efficacy andits three dimension scores, but there was no difference in the self-decision(p>0.05).3. After intervention, the scores of functioning scale (excepting cognitivefunctioning) and the scores in fatigue, dyspnea, comparison significantly difference inintervention group (p<0.05); but there were no significant difference in other aspects(p>0.05). After intervention, the scores of two groups in the global health status,functioning scale (excepting social functioning), fatigue, insomnia, appetite loss scale,comparison significantly difference between the two groups (p<0.05); but there were nosignificant difference in other aspects (p>0.05). Conclusion: Self management education can reduce the pulmonary complicationsrate,enhance the sense of self-efficacy and improve the quality of life of patients withesophageal cancer. Self management education can be used in patients with esophagealcancer.
