With the development of science and technology, the functionality and comfort of wheel stretchers keep increasing. However, due to the variety of hospital environments and the patients’situations, there are great differences among all medical instruments, leading to some problems in the daily operation, which greatly affects the hospital practical work efficiency and even endangers the patients’safety Through the investigation in the hospital and the simulation of the use of the wheel stretchers, our paper improved the design of the current wheel stretchers and tested its effectiveness. We proposed some directions for the improvement of such medical instruments in the future. Moreover, our work helps the establishment of the standardized system of medical instruments.Taking the wheel stretcher as the research object, we comprehensively analyzed all the parts of their daily operation. Based on some industrial design theories covering emotionalized design, ergonomics, machine design and standardized research, as well as data collected from investigation and survey, we found some existing problems during the operation. Our research mainly includes several parts as follows:1. Through investigation and survey, we summarized the existing problems during the daily operation of the wheel stretchers;2. We simulated several conditions in using wheel stretchers, including in outdoor and indoor environments and with different users, through which we found some potential problems.3. We reviewed current related standardize principals, including existing standards for medical instruments, the safety requirement standards for the translation of patients in the emergency department and so on, based on which we proposed some proper and effective standard principles for the improvement of the wheel stretchers.4. With the combination of the related theories in industrial design, including ergonomics, emotionalized design, color design, shape design and machine design, we improved the current wheel stretcher.5. We summarize the past research on the design of the wheel stretchers and concluded some standardized methods in the industrial design application.Based on past industrial design research related to wheel stretchers, we firstly reviewed the development of wheel stretchers and analyzed some existing problems during their daily operation. Then with the combination of several standardized principles in medical instruments, we put forward some suggestions and future directions for the establishment of the standardized principles for the medical instruments. At last, we improved the design of the wheel stretchers and concluded some design approaches.
