BackgroundNowadays, the scientific and humanistic spirits have been blent and culture of nursing students’ caring ability arouses the attention from mass educators. The researches about caring education focused on Curriculum, teaching methodology, mode construction and so on in the domestic and international. The implement of all these actions need the higher caring ability of teachers. But how are the teachers’self-caring ability, it has not been reported yet.ObjectivesIn order to formulate the further intervention on caring ability and provide the theoretical basis on teachers’ caring ability, the paper is to research the present situation on humanistic caring ability of nursing teachers in colleges and universities, discuss the influencing factors on teachers’ caring ability and understand the teachers’ caring cognition.MethodsThe study used the stratified sampling method----investigating the caring ability and influencing factors of266nursing teachers in colleges and universities across the country at different levels with questionnaire.The survey tools adopted as follows:1. General information questionnaire, including age, gender, education, the growth environment, only child or not, the family atmosphere and related data on sociology of population2. Caring Ability Inventory (CAI):the Chinese version of the CAI compiled by American nursing scientist Nkongho was adopted in the investigation. The scale contains37items and Likert Scale-Seven-Scale questionnaire was used. The higher the score shows, the stronger the caring ability. The Cronbach’s a coefficient of each dimension in CAI scale was from0.71to0.84,the test-retest relicapacity was0.80-0.94.3. Caring Dimensions Inventory (CDI):the CDI questionnaire designed by Edinburgh University was adopted.It contains37items and Likert Scale-Five-Scale questionnaire was used. The higher the score shows, the better the subjects understand and cognize the caring. The CDI questionnaire reliability was0.90.4. Questionnaire on work situation of teachers:This questionnaire was self-designed after consulted the literature by consulting the experts twice. It had formed a questionnaire that contains basic situation, work environment and open-ended problems. The Cronbach’s a Coefficient of the questionnaire was0.78. CVI in each item was more than0.83.The date was statistically analyzed with SPSS17.0software and was used descriptive statistical analysis, independent-samples t test, one-way ANOVA, multiple stepwise regression analysis, correlation analysis and other methods.Results1. Present status of teachers’care ability:The score of college nursing teachers’ humanistic caring ability was189.36±17.60, dimensionality of understanding was70.74±7.40, dimensionality of encouraging was60.24±10.11and all of them are lower than that of norm.79.3%of the teachers’caring ability was at a low level, referring to the international scoring criteria of caring ability.2. The influencing factors of teachers’caring ability:The differences had statistical significance through the comparison of caring abilities in each item among "nature of teachers, teaching species, relationship with colleagues, degree of assistance offered by co-workers and leaders, the degree of the understandings leader to the teachers, training experience, attention-degree of the knowledge on humane care and attitude towards nursing specialty. P<0.05.The differences had no statistical significance, which through the comparison of caring abilities in each item among "gender, only child, final education, growth environment, the degree of loving care obtained in growth, marital status, fertility condition, conjugal relation, the internal relationships of the family members, professional title, duty, hospital work experience, working years, weekly teaching hours and teaching methods. P>0.05. According to the multiple stepwise regression analysis, the main influencing factors of the teachers’caring ability were nature of teachers, teaching species, the degree of the understandings leader to the teachers, attention-degree of the knowledge on humane caring and training experience. The united explanation variance of five influencing factors is25.5%.3. Teachers’cognition of caring:The TP of questionnaire was106.90±11.66.The top5were "Giving reassurance about clinical procedure, Providing privacy for a patient, Observing the effects of a medication on a patient, Being cheerful with a patient, Being technically competent with a clinical procedure", the mean of five items were4.816,4.781,4.757,4.731,4.721; The lowest5were "Sharing your personal problems with a patient, Sitting with a patient, Assisting a patient with an activity of living, Exploring a patient’s lifestyle, Feeling sorry for a patient", the mean of five items were2.331,3.119,3.631,3.672,3.708.Conclusions1. The norm of humanistic caring ability about nursing course teachers in the domestic colleges and universities is lower than that of the international caring ability. The culture of caring ability should be strengthened.2. The main influencing factors of teachers’ caring ability are:"nature of teachers, teaching species, the degree of the understandings leader to the teachers, training experience, attention-degree of the knowledge on humane care and training experience".3. The teachers’ cognition of caring is good, but therapeutic care is main. The culture of teachers’humanistic spirit should be strengthened and the importance and connotation of caring should be deeply understood.
