Objective: To learn about the morbidity of the desmoid tumor of abdominal wall,to get familiar with the biological behavior of the desmoid tumor of abdominal wallthrough the clinical analysis, to conclude the progress in the comprehensive treatment ofthe desmoid tumor of abdominal wall and to explore the best clinical diagnosis andtreatment.Methods:17patients with desmoid tumor of abdominal wall treated in the SecondAffiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University from September2002to September2012and proved to have complete clinical, pathological and follow-up data after thepostoperative pathology were selected. The clinical characteristics and biologicalbehavior of the desmoid tumor of abdominal wall were comprehended through theanalysis of the patients’ clinical material (including the age, gender, tumor size, clinicalmanifestation, therapy method, etc.). The prognosis of the patient was learned and therelationship between different treatment methods and the prognosis was analyzedthrough the follow-up visit of the patients. Results: In this study, the17patients with desmoid tumor of abdominal wall weretreated for the first time, in which there were2male patients and15female patients. The age ranged from18to62, and the medians age was32. The course of the diseaselasted from one month to36months, and the average was8.2months. The initialsymptom was local enclosed mass, in which2patients felt pain and distension in theaffected part, and the rest15patients were painless enclosed mass. One patient had twotumors, while the rest16patients had only one tumor. The size of the tumor: the largest10cm×6cm, and the smallest3cm×2cm. According to the CT scan, it was suggested asthe solid tumor mass before the surgery for the17patients. Ten patients received theB-ultrasonic examination, suggesting it was the muscular layer hypoecho solid enclosed mass of the abdominal wall.2patients received the fine-needle aspiration biopsy beforethe surgery, suggesting it tended to be the fibroma. Five patients were considered aswith this disease, while the rest twelve were diagnosed as the tumor in abdominal wallbefore the surgery. Excision was given to all the patients, but it reappeared in fourpatients after the surgery, with the recurrence rate23.5%.Conclusions:Desmoid tumor of abdominal wall is a borderline tumor occurring ininvasive growth. The incidence of females is higher than that of males, but it is low. It isdifficult to diagnose before the surgery, and pathological examination is needed to makea definite diagnosis. The recurrence rate is high. It should be treated as the softconnective tissue tumor with low potential malignancy, and radical operation is themajor therapeutic method. The recurrence rate can be decreased with the post-operationradiotherapy.
