ObjectiveTo compare the clinical effect of Percutaneous Kypoplasty(PKP) for freshand old osteoporotic vertebral compressive fractures(oVCFs).MethodsThe study involved88patients with oVCFs treated by PKP from July2010to July2011. There were59patients with fresh fractures (Group A),29patientswith old fractures (Group B). Group A included18males and41females with anaverage age of72years (ranging from60to83years). Group B included8males and21females with an average age of77years (ranging from68to85years). Clinical outcome of all the patients was evaluated after operationthrough visual analog scale (VAS),Oswestry disability index(ODI),the heightof anterior and middle column of the vertebra and the kyphotic angle.ResultsThe VAS score, the ODI, improved significantly after PKP in bothgroups(P<0.05). However, the postoperative height of anterior and middlecolumn vertebra, the kyphotic angle did not improved in group B as significantas in group A. In the follow-up period,4new fractures (2adjacent) appeared inthe Group A, while3new fractures(1adjacent) in the Group B.ConclusionPKP is a effective treatment for patients with fresh or old painfulosteoporotic verteb ral fractures in terms of pain relief and functional recovery. The risk of new fracture and Lo ng-term efficacy need further research. SignificanceIn China, more than60elderly population has reached130million, nearly84million of the elderly is the threat of osteoporosis, including60-69-year-old women osteoporosis incidence rate as high as50-70%. According tostatistics, the United States each year,1.5million new cases of osteoporosisfracture, every year caused by fracture treatment costs$15billion, the cost willbe higher because of the large population in our country. PKP can quicklyrelieve or ease the pain, and can also be some degree of recovery is compressedvertebral body height, increase the stiffness and strength of vertebral body, make the physiological curvature of spine certain recovery, the patients toreduce pain, improve the patient’s quality of life, avoid long-term lie in bed andlead to fatal complications, prolong patient life, bring convenience for homecare, and also corresponding to reduce the economic burden to society.
