OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence, occurrence time, types, clinical manifestation, treatment, outcomes, risk factors and prevention ofpostoperative cardiac arrhythmias of pneumonectomy.METHODS:116patients who underwent pneumonectomy in the firstaffiliated hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January2002toJuly2012were studied retrospectively. The incidence, occurrence time, types, clinical manifestation, treatment, outcomes of postoperative cardiacarrhythmias of pneumonectomy were analyzed. The different risk factorsbetween cardiac arrhythmia group and non-cardiac arrhythmia group werecompared. The prevention of postoperative cardiac arrhythmias ofpneumonectomy were analyzed.RESULTS: The incidence of postoperative cardiac arrhythmias ofpneumonectomy was47.4%(55/116) in116pneumonectomypatients.Cardiac arrhythmias usually occurred in the first three days afteroperation. The types of cardiac arrhythmias were sinus tachycardia (40/55,72.7%); atrial fibrillation(6/55,10.9%);paroxysmal supraventriculartachycardia (4/55,7.3%);premature atrial beats(2/55,3.6%);premature ventricular beats(2/55,3.6%);sinus bradycardia(1/55,1.8%). Theduration of cardiac arrhythmia was transient(49/55,89.1%). Resultsshowed that preoperative electrocardiogram abnormality, age(more than60years old),smoking history, intraoperative operation on pericardium, postoperative electrolyte disturbances were risk factors of postoperativecardiac arrhythmias of pneumonectomy (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of postoperative cardiacarrhythmias of pneumonectomy was44.7%(55/116).The common typeswere sinus tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, paroxysmal supraventriculartachycardia, premature atrial beats, premature pentricular peats and sinusbradycardia. Cardiac arrhythmias usually occurred in the first three daysafter operation. The duration of cardiac arrhythmia was transient. The riskfactors included preoperative electrocardiogram abnormality, age(morethan60years old), smoking history, intraoperative operation onpericardium, postoperative electrolyte disturbances.
