Objective:To compare the side effects of molar bands and buccal tubes on periodontal health during orthodontic treatment. Methods:We selected14patients whom treated with fixed appliance, they all in the age range of12-16years,for each one choosing two first molars and one of second molars in mandible as research objects, it is a total of42teeth. We bonded both a buccal tube and a molar band in the first molars of mandible, using the stochastic method to decide which side bonded the buccal tube, bonding it in the middle of the tooth crown. Take the second molar in buccal tube side as a blank control. In this study,28first molars were selected as the experimental group and14second molars without fixed appliance as the control group. Experimental group can be divided into two small groups. Buccal group, the14molars which used the buccal tubes in orthodontic treatment. Moral group, the14teeth which used the molar bands in orthodontic treatment. Gingival index and Poket probing depth were recorded for clinical evaluation,IL-1and IL-6were tested use ELISA in this study. Results:There was no difference in all of the indexes among three groups before our experiment. After placing fixed appliance6months and12months, both of the experimental groups (buccal tube group and molar band group) showed that GI, PPD continued to increase. Compared with baseline, they had significant difference (P<0.05), although there was no significant difference between buccal tube group and molar band group (P>0.05), the mean value of the GI,PPD in molar band group was larger than buccal tube guoup. After placing fixed appliance6months and12months, both of the experimental groups showed that IL-1and IL-6continued to increase. Compared with baseline, they had significant difference (P<0.05).In addition, there was significant difference of IL-1and IL-6between buccal tube group and molar band group (P<0.01).It showed that inflammatory substances in the gingiva groove liquid increased during the treatment. Conclusion:In orthodontic treatment, buccal tubes caused less inflammatory response on periodontal health than molar bands, which was helpful to achieve better treatment effect. We concluded that buccal tube was more conducive to the periodontal health than molar band.
