Objectives:1. To describe the status of medical students’s caring ability in aMedical College2. To compare the caring ability of the medical students among thedifferent natural conditions3. To explore and describe influencing factors associated with caringability of medical studentsMethods:Investigation object is professional,full-time clinical medicineundergraduates (Five year educational system)and nursingundergraduates(Four year educational system) of a medical college.Totalsample size of552included8classes of4grades of nursing professional,10classes of5grades of clinical medicine.The content of questionnairesinclude demographic information and influencing factors designed byresearcher, Caring Ability Inventory (CAI) translated and revised by XuJuan, Liu Yilan.The data was analysized by SPSS17statistical software andthe statistical ways are: descriptive statistic alanalysis, anova analysis,correlational analysis and regressional analysis.Results:1. The overall status of caring abilityThe mean score on CAI of all investigation object is190.92±19.71.Themean scores in dimension of knowing,courage,patience are74.94±9.61,56.40±10.79,59.58±6.24. If using the nurse norm as thestandard,there are5.07%students owning higher caring ability,21.74% owning average caring ability,73.19%owning lower caring ability;If usingthe undergraduate norm as the standard,there are22.86%students owninghigher caring ability,37.26%students owning average caringability,39.29%students owning lower caring ability.The mean score on CAI of nursing undergraduates was194.99±17.81.The mean scores in dimension of knowing,courage,patiencewere75.69±8.72,58.68±9.56,60.61±5.08。2.The distributive condition of students’s caring ability of differentdemographic informationEach dimension scores and the total score of female students is higherthan that of male student (P<0.01); The total score of Self-rated health ingood students is higher than that of self-rated health in generalstudents(P<0.01);The score of Non-only Child is higher than Only Child inthe courage dimensions (P<0.05); In graduating class,the score of nursingfemale students is higher than clinical medicine female students; Inclinical medicine profession, the caring ability and courage dimensionsscore is decreased with the increase of the grade (P<0.01). In nursingprofession, the patience dimensions score is decreased with the increase ofthe grade (P<0.05);the score of female students in graduating class is lowerthan in1grade class in the caring ability and courage, patience dimensions(P﹤0.05).Whether the class cadre, whether having experienced of caring sickrelatives scores in all dimensions and total score haven’t difference3. Influencing factors associated with caring ability3.1Single factor analysisCaring ability and all dimensions are positively correlated with theoutgoing degree on the students’character,the favorite degree onprofessional,the harmonious degree on family relationship(P<0.01). Caringability and knowing and patience dimensions are positively correlated withsharing chores (P<0.01). Caring ability and all dimensions are negativelycorrelated with the lever of being disagreed with his parents and beingrefused to pay for his parents (P<0.05). 3.2Multiple factor analysisInfluencing factors associate with caring ability include:the attitudesof parents toward the elderly(β=0.238),the relationship with mother(β=0.161),the lever of being agreed with his parents(β=0.179),the lever ofparents accepting their children to paying for them (β=0.098),character(β=0.139), peasonal professional attitude(β=0.104),sexual distinction(β=0.099),specialty (β=0.094),whether the class cadre (β=0.089),health(β=0.079),experienced of caring sick relatives (β=0.060).The most influencing factors is the attitudes of parents toward theelderly (β=0.269)〠the relationship with mother (β=0.303) associated withpatience dimensions;The lever of being agreed with his parents (β=0.250)〠the lever ofparents accepting their children to paying for them (β=0.170) associatedwith courage dimensions.Conclusions:1. It’s lower than the nurse norm abroad,the overall status of medicalstudents and nursing undergraduates’s caring ability in a medicalcollege,but no less than the undergraduate norm abroad. There is a longway to go about the Caring ability cultivation of nursing specialty.2. Each dimension scores and the total score of female students andself-rated health in good students is higher. In the courage dimensions,non-only child and nursing undergraduates female students is higher.Clinical practice doesn’t necessarily improve students caring ability.Medical education does not improve the caring ability of medical students。3. Influencing factors associate with caring ability include:familyrelationship,family education,character,peasonal professional attitude,sexual distinction,specialty,whether the class cadre,health,experienced ofcaring sick relatives. |
