Objective: To study the effects of magnesium on early gastrointestinal function ofpreterm infants in neonatal intensive care unit(NICU).Methods: A total of132cases were collected from October2009to August2012inUnion hospital affiliated to Tongji medical college of Huazhong university of scienceand technology. Cases were divided into two groups according to the babies’ serummagnesium concentration on the day of admission.The conditions of mothersincluding mothers’ age, the proportion of primiparas, history of adverse maternal,prenatal exposure to magnesium sulfate and prenatal diagnosis of premature ruptureof membranes(PROM), severe preeclampsia, fetal distress and intrauterine growthrestriction(IUGR), the placenta and/or amniotic fluid abnormality, merging otherdisease occurrence were comparative analysis between two groups, so were theconditions of babies including gestational age, birth weight, gestational age and birthweight relations, gender,1minutes Apgar score, delivery mode. Gastric retention rate,incidence of abdominal distention, stomach extract containing bile rate, incidence ofmeconium discharge delay, the time needed for enteral nutrition of120ml/Kg·daywere comparative analysis between two groups in both babies who are small forgestational age(SGA) and appropriate for gestational age(AGA).Results:The average mothers’age, the rates of antenatal magnesium sulfate exposure,severe preeclampsia and IUGR were higher(all P<0.05) in elevated magnesium groupthan in normal magnesium group. The average birth weight of babies in elevatedmagnesium group was lower(P<0.05) than normal magnesium group. The rate ofmeconium discharge delay of babies who are SGA in elevated magnesium group washigher(P<0.05) than those in normal magnesium group. Conclusion: The gastrointestinal function of preterm infants could be effected byserum magnesium concentration.
