Objective To explore the current status of prevalence, awareness, treatment andcontrol of hypertension and its risk factors among residents over35years old in acommunity, Jingmen, Hubei. To evaluate quality of life(QOL)of patients withhypertension and to explore its risk factors. Methods The survey was conducted from1stApril to30stApril,2012. Overall surveymethod was used and1489participates were enrolled. The questionnaire includedbasic demographic, habits and customs correlated with hypertension and QOL ofpatients with hypertension. Clinical examination included height, weight, systolicblood pressure(SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP). Logistic regression analysiswas utilized to explore the potential risk factors of hypertension and QOL.Results (1) The prevalence and the standardized rate of hypertension were42.7%and36.0%, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension was46.7%in male while38.4%in female. The percentage of awareness, treatment and control of hypertensionrespectively were56.8%,50.4%and18.4%.(2) Analysis of single and multivariatefactor logistic regression found that elder, male, taking excessive salt, and overweightor obesity were risk factors of hypertension while consuming more milk wasprotection factor.(3) Compared with non-hypertensive residents, patients withhypertension had lower QOL on physical fitness, social activities, change in health, overall health and pain aspects. The QOL of patients with isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) and systolic-diastolic hypertension (SDH) were poorer thanpatients with isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH). All hypertension patients typicallysuffered from physical fitness decline and poor overall health.(4) Suffered withhypertension, elder, not in marriage (unmarried, divorced and widowed) were riskfactors of the QOL, while increment of physical activity, non-mental workers, male, higher income levels, BMI in normal range were protection factors. Conclusion There was a high prevalence of hypertension in adults over35years oldin the community, Jingmen. We thus suggest that, on the one hand, public educationand health intervention programs for preventing the occurrence of hypertensionshould be explored to conducted residents’ healthy awareness, encourage them to quitsmoking and drink less, reduce salty food consumption, increase milk consumptionand physical exercise. On the other hand, community comprehensive prevention andcare of hypertension are required for improving the QOL of patients withhypertension continuously, especially those patients with ISH and SDH anddecreasing blood pressure, especially SBP below to the normal standard.
