OBJIECTIVE This study estimated the status of quality of life (QOL) and social support among individuals with HIV/AIDS in Kunming city of Yunnan province. We measured influencing factors of quality of life (QOL) and social support among individual living with HIV/AIDS in Kunming. The results would provide some suggestions or evidence for the local relevant departments to formulate strategies to improve quality of life (QOL).METHODS A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was carried out in Kunming. Convenient sampling method was used to select the samples from Yunnan CDC, Yunnan and Kunming infectious disease hospitals. We random sampling was used to select>200individuals from all institutions among individuals with HIV/AIDS18-70years of age. Patients’QOL and level of social support were measured with the MOS-HIV questionnaire and Social Support Appraisals Scale. Multiple linear regressions were applied to analyze possible influencing factors of patients’ QOL and social support.RESULTS There were a total of247people in this study, including150male(60.7%) and97female(39.3%), nationality was209, accounting for84.6%, minority was38, accounting for15.4%. About71.6%of our target population was18-34and35-44years old, most of them just graduated from middle school or high school and above, and families with per capita income was about5258yuan.Among the subjects, mean scores for the domains of overall physical score, overall mental health, general health perception, physical functioning, role functioning, social functioning, cognitive functioning, bodily pain, mental health, energy/fatigue, self-reported QOL and health transition were47.49±11.15,43.61±9.744,2.91±19.86,79.35±24.87,59.59±47.91,67.04±33.65,71.97±25.39,81.33±26.18,61.96±22.31,49.32±23.83,74.41±21.02,51.82±21.06, and48.99±29.80, respectively.The main score for the domains of self-reported QOL and health transition scores, mental summary scores, and transition support score were higher in male patients than in female patients; For mental summary scores, mental health, health perception and changes in health status, senior high school and higher level of education people got the highest scores compared to junior high school and primary school level of education; For physical functioning cognitive functioning bodily pain, mental health, energy/fatigue, mental summary scores and physical summary scores, patients who were18-34ages have the higher scores than other patients; For social functioning scores were positively related to non-drug users and married patients; For role functioning scores patients who have job with high role functioning scores.Multivariable linear regression analysis showed:to physical summary scores, symptoms of infection number(β=-0.84, t=-3.18,P<0.01) related to HIV infection were unfavorable factors; to physical summary scores and mental summary scores age(β=-3.75, t=-3.53,P<0.01;β=-2.73,t=-2.93, P<0.01)were unfavorable factors; social support (β=0.55, t=3.26,P<0.01)to physical summary scores, average yearly income(β=4.18,t=2.14,P<0.01;β=7.20, t=2.53,P<0.01)to physical summary scores and mental summary scores, CD4+T to mental summary score and role functioning were favorable factors.Overall social support scores were positively related to all the domains of quality of life except energy/fatigue, self-reported scores. The subjective support score were positively related to mental health and negatively associated with bodily pain and energy/fatigue scores.The objective support score, subjective support score and utilization of support and overall social support score were5.94±2.24,17.20±6.28,5.48±1.93and28.62±7.64, respectively. Male patients had higher objective support score than female patients.The results of multiple linear regression indicated that married patients, patients with higher scores of bodily pain and health status, and patients who received free treatment were more likely to have higher overall score of social support. Married patients and patients who received free treatment were more likely to have higher objective social support scores, whereas patients with higher scores of bodily pain and health transition, married patients, and patients who received free treatment tended to have higher scores of subjective social support. Furthermore, patients with higher yearly income and score of health transition and patients who didn’t receive anti-retroviral therapy were more likely to have higher scores of social utilization.CONCLUSION we found that compared with the national level scores the quality of live and the social support among individuals with HIV/AIDS in Kunming was lower, we must be more concern about it. Age, marital status, whether received anti-retroviral therapy are possible influencing factors of level of social support and QOL.Further more, these findings underscore, degree of education, route of infection, the number of symptoms and complications related to QOL among individuals with HIV/AIDS, actively measures should be taken to prevent its further development.
