Objective:To compare the effect of total enteral or supplementary parenteralnutrition on patients with sepsis.Methods:80patients with sepsis in ICU participated inthis investigation were divided into total enteral nutrition group (TEN group,n=52) andsupplementary parenteral nutrition group (SPN group,n=28).The choice of nutritionalmethod according to physician judgment combined with the wishes of thepatients’families.Start enteral nutrition when the patients were diagnosed after24hoursand his or her was hemodynamic stable.Nutrient solution was infused through nasaljejunal feeding tube.To be adjusted daily infusion volume and infusion according togastrointestinal tolerability of patients.Set7to10days up to the target caloric andobjectives nitrogen.Enteral nutrition support three days later started to feed parenteralnutrition to meet the target caloric supply via a central venous. When the amount of enteralnutrition support to meet the80%calories of target of or oral intake, stop parenteralnutrition.Observed the7-day mortality,the30-day mortality, the ICU mortality,Length ofICU stay,Infections developed, duration of mechanical ventilation and costs.Significancefor the investigation was P<0.05.Results:Mortality rates were similar in TEN vs.SPNpatients at7days,90days,or during their ICU stay.Length of ICU stay and duration ofmechanical ventilation were not statistically significant (P>0.05).In SPN group Costsspent on nutritional treatment was about (5163.32±3733.36)yuan,which was moreexpensive than in TEN group,P<0.05.Conclusion:Compared to enteral nutritionalsupport, supplementary parenteral nutritional support can not imp rove outcome in patientswith sepsis.Enteral nutrition is the first choice.
