Objective To evaluate the feasibility of applying psychological resilience self-reportscale of middle-school students on left-behind children of grade four to nine inChangfeng county, Anhui province. And from the perspective of positive psychology toexplore the influencing factors of psychological resilience and the relationship withneglect and coping styles in left-behind children with Chinese characteristics ofdisadvantaged children, and to inspect the intermediary role of coping styles betweenneglect and psychological resilience. Thus we can provide the basis for finding out theinternal mechanism and realizing healthy development of psychological resilience inleft-behind children. Methods Using cluster sampling method to select three middle schools and fiveprimary schools from Changfeng County, Hefei. The questionnaire survey wasconducted on all students from four to nine grades in schools extracted from ChangfengCounty. Inputting data with EpiData software and processing data with SPSS software,we got information of2655students. Evaluation of the reliability and validity onpsychological resilience scale was applied to left-behind children who were selectedaccording to the definition of it in this study. The reliability evaluation index includedinternal consistency Cronbach ’s a coefficient, split half reliability and test-retestreliability, and the validity evaluation index included structured validity, content validityand criterion related validity. A comparative analysis of the influence factors ofpsychological resilience for left-behind children was conducted using t test or analysis of variance. And multiple linear regression method was used to explore the relationshipamong psychological resilience, neglect and coping styles for left-behind children. Results The Cronbach’s a coefficient of the total scale scores was0.948, the split halfreliability was0.877, and the test-retest reliability was0.882. Six factors includingproblem solving, cooperation and communication, self-efficacy, goals and aspirations,self-awareness and empathy were produced through factor analysis and theiraccumulative contribution to total variance was65.486%. The correlation coefficientsbetween the total scores and six factors scores were from0.704to0.853, which weregreater than those among six factors scores that were from0.409to0.703. Thecorrelation coefficients between each item and corresponding factors scores were from0.702to0.880, which were greater than those between each item and the total scoresthat were from0.446to0.724. The total scores of psychological resilience scale werenegatively correlated with scores of depression and anxiety. There were significantdifferences of psychological resilience for left-behind children on grades, boarding, parents contact frequency and duration of stay. However, that showed no difference ongenders, only-child, types of out-parents and types of guardian. Neglect was highlynegatively correlated with the total scores and all factors of psychological resiliencescale for left-behind children, the same relationship with positive coping style, and theopposite relationship with negative coping style. The total scores and all factors ofpsychological resilience scale for left-behind children were highly positively correlatedwith the positive coping style, and the opposite relationship with negative coping style. The highest correlation with neglect was negative coping style, and the highestcorrelation with psychological resilience was positive coping style. Positive coping styleplayed a partial mediating role in the influence of neglect on psychological resilience, and negative coping style played a completely mediating role. Conclusion There were good reliability and validity of psychological resilienceself-report scale of middle school students applied to four to nine grade left-behindchildren in Changfeng County. The scale can be used as a good psychological resilienceassessment tools for the crowd. The main protective factors of psychological resiliencefor left-behind children were the senior, boarding, higher parents contact frequency, et al.Neglect would not only affect the level of psychological resilience, but also affect thecoping styles of left-behind children. The worse the neglect situation the moreleft-behind children inclined to use negative coping style, and the more inclined toadopt positive coping style the higher level of psychological resilience of left-behindchildren. Coping style played a mediating role in the influence of neglect onpsychological resilience.
