Objective:To study the changes of plasma gastrin(Gas), substance P(SP) and vascoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) among family members of children with recurrent abdominal pain and to explore if there is the rule of the changes. Methods:The fasting plasma Gas,SP and VIP were determined by radioimmunoassay method among30children with recurrent abdominal pain,45family members including first-degree relatives and second-degree relatives as well as35normal healthy children and20normal healthy adults. Individuals were divided into five groups:children with recurrent abdominal pain(study group1), family members with recurrent abdominal pain(study group2),normal healthy children(control groupl),family adults without recurrent abdominal pain(control group2)and normal healthy adults(control group3). The whole family members of7children with recurrent abdominal pain were focused on and analysed.Results:55of130volunteers were with recurrent abdominal pain including30children and25adults. There were22adults with and20adults without recurrent abdominal pain in the whole family members of7children with recurrent abdominal pain. The levels(pg/ml) of fasting plasma Gas, SP and VIP in study group1were47.63±17.07,44.5±25.38and66.9±15.49respectively. Ones in control groupl were48.07±22.93,152.7±50.36and 186.81±69.8respectively. The levels(pg/ml) of fasting plasma Gas, SP and VIP in study group2were37.14±14.30,48.67±20.09and63.54±11.54respectively.Ones in control group2were42.39±14.70,43.75±15.99and64.58±11.86respectively.The levels(pg/ml) of fasting plasma Gas, SP and VIP in control group3were42.72±14.47,37.53±20.73and56.22±10.04respectively. The fasting plasma Gas content has no difference between study group1and control group1(P>0.05), but the levels of fasting plasma SP and VIP were both in decrease and have different between study group1and control groupl(P<0.05). The fasting plasma Gas,SP and VIP have no difference between study group2and control group2(P>0.05).The levels of fasting plasma Gas content has no difference between study group2and control group3(P>0.05), but the levels of fasting plasma SP and VIP were both in increase and have different between study group2and control group3. The fasting plasma Gas content has no difference between country group1and control group3(P>0.05),but the levels of fasting plasma SP and VIP have different between country group1and control group3(P<0.01). The levels of fasting plasma SP and VIP has no difference between study group1and study group2(P>0.05).The levels of fasting plasma Gas, SP and VIP content has no difference among the whole family members of7children with recurrent abdominal pain including22adult members with and20adult members without recurrent abdominal pain (P>0.05).Conclusion:In children with recurrent abdominal pain, there was no direct association between plasma Gas content and recurrent abdominal pain, but the SP and VIP secretion are in decrease. It suggested that the decrease of plasma SP and VIP may has a close relationship with the pathogenesis of children with recurrent abdominal pain. In adults with recurrent abdominal pain, the SP and VIP secretion are in increase. It suggested that the increase of plasma SP and VIP may has a close relationship with the pathogenesis of adults with recurrent abdominal pain. In normal healthy children and normal healthy adults, there was the same plasma Gas content, and the plasma SP and VIP content were lower in normal healthy adults than in normal healthy children. But there were the same plasma SP and VIP content in children and adults with recurrent abdominal pain. The contents of plasma Gas, SP and VIP were consistent in the whole family members of7children with recurrent abdominal pain. It suggested that the secretion of gastrointestinal hormone is disorder in the families with recurrent abdominal pain. but there was no correlation among Gas, SP and VIP.
