Objective: By conducting the clinical pathway management research on inpatients sufferingfrom airway foreign bodies in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, aLevel3A hospital in Xi’an, the study developed the clinical pathway for airway foreignbody, regulated the procedure of the treatment. The changes of costs of the inpatients withairway foreign bodies before and after application of the clinical pathway were compared toassess the effcts of application of clinical pathway on the control to the excessive medicalcare and to identify the reasons for the changes. The costs of the analysis of the clinicalpathway for a single disease in hospitalized patients impact of proposed new excessivemedical control strategy to regulate the behavior of health services, and promote the healthyand orderly development of China’s medical and health undertakings. Methods: The data of the inpatients suffered from airway foreign bodies in above hospitalfrom May to December were collocted. There were two groups, the trail group with the160patients hospitalized from September to December, while the clinical pathway was used; thecontrol group with the116patients, without clinical pathway, hospitalized from May toAugust. A comparative study for two groups of patients were conducted. The research datawere collected from data in the Information Branch Network Center of the hospital HISdatabase and clinical pathway implementation process。Microsoft Excel and SPSS17.0statistical software were used for database buliding and analyzing. Descriptive analysis, comparative analysis were used to compare costs of hospitalization before and afterconducting the clinical pathway. Results: There was no significant difference between the general information of the pathwaygroup and the control group, which indicated that the two groups of data are comparable. The costs of the operation, and treatment between two groups decresed with statisticalsignificant difference, which indicated the application of cilinical pathway worked in controlling excessive medical care. However, the expenditure on laboratory increased withstatistical significant indicates the cilinical pathway was not a catholicon in treatingexcessive medical care. Conclusion: Clinical Pathway worked in controlling excessive medical care, but it needs tocombine with other measures, such as DRGs. Further researches should be conductined andmore policies should be developed to control the excessive medical care.
