Combined with the construction of the display greenhouse in Nanjing Botanical Garden Mem Sun Yat-Sen, during2005-2007, more than600ornamental plants were introduced and cultivated in the Area I and Area II from Yunnan, Guangdong and the North Garden of the garden, which reached the number of600. The species which were suitable for the environmental conditions and had good adaptability in Nanjing were selected by observing the phenological phase, flower and fruit time and the growth situation. At the same time, the adaptability of all the plants was evaluated to provide reference for the introduction and management in related area. Most species introduced grew well now, but more the80species died of adaptability or cultivation and more than60species didn’t grow well. The main cultural environment problem in the greenhouse is the high temperature and poor illumination in summer. The cooling method in summer was natural ventilation+forced ventilation+top fog spray. For the poor illumination, we didn’t spraying shade paint on the top and kept the roof clean. the plants with different light intensity needs were cropped in different region, which made full use of the weak light conditions in the greenhouse. There were24species tropical fruits trees in the greenhouse, most of which vegetative growth were good. A and mangoes, jackfruits, miracle fruits and jaboticabas grew so well that they all fruited. There were12species in Acanthaceae introduced in they greenhouse, which4species grew best and7species grew better.7species had higher survival rate of softwood cuttings without hormones. Plants in Acanthaceae were one of better performed and successfully introduced with higher ornamental value groups. There were33species in Arecaceae, which were planted in Palm area, out of which3species died,5species grew worse and21species grew better. It was indicated most species in Arecaceae can be suit for the greenhouse environment in Nanjing. There were9species in Caesalpiniaceae, out of which5species flowered and fruited and most of which had high ornamental value. But the important problem was the poor illumination.13species in Marantaceae were introduced in the greenhouse, among which11species grew well. Most of them like shady, damp surroundings and were suitable for growing under tall trees. They were the successfully introduced with higher ornamental value ground cover plants.35species in Araceae were introduced in the greenhouse, among which9species grew best,21species better and5species grew well. Plants in the family had good adaptability and were fit for the shade in the greenhouse.23species in Bromeliaceae were introduced in the greenhouse. They grew well with good illumination but bad with poor illumination. It was necessary to provide enough light for the normal growth and development for the plants in Bromeliaceae.41ferns were cultivated in the greenhouse, among which37species grew well. And ferns were the suitable groups for introduction for greenhouse.Palmae,Acanthaceae,Araceae, some species of Ficus,Marantaceae, ferns and the other shade-tolerant tropical plant species can be introduced and cultivated in greenhouse in Nanjing area; The introductions of tropical fruit trees and tropical heliophilous species were unsuccessful, for the introductions of these species, a careful selection should be considered.
