At present, there are many different problems in the process of operation ofcomprehensive passenger transport terminals, such as low effective utilization of thespace, crow of pedestrian flow, inconvenience of transfer, and so on. In addition to theinfluence of the sharp increase volume of passengers, the other major factor is that thedeviation in the experience-based planning and design criteria as well as the operationplan based on the feasible prediction cannot be ignored, and it is hard to optimize thestructure and function of facilities in comprehensive passenger transport terminals.The floor space and capital investment of comprehensive passenger transportterminals is large, thus, secondary innovation will be hard once built, in the planningand design process, clear the types and scales of facilities, and optimize structure andfunction through the reasonable facility layout is the necessary way to increase theoperation efficiency and reduce the negative effect on the transfer activities.This paper was geared to actual demand. On the basis of the analysis and summary ofthe domestic and foreign relevant research and engineering practice, main researchcontent was clearly, and the research technical route had been designed rely onmulti-disciplinary theory as the support, such as traffic engineering, statistics,operations research, social psychology and so on. First, the connotation of publicservice area in comprehensive passenger transport terminals was defined,Representative comprehensive passenger transport terminals with different types hadbeen investigated, then the existing facilities and their utilization situation in thepublic service area were grasped, and the typical facilities configuration was clearly.On this basis, by function and pedestrian’s behavior characteristics analysis ofdifferent facilities, the facilities in public service area were classified rely on thefunctional position. Second, parameters and curves for relations of pedestrian flow indifferent terminal facilities, corridors and stairs were established based on the surveydata. The required space of pedestrians was gained by analyzing important points oncurves generated by parameter relations, then pedestrian’s space demand wasconfirmed and classified. The service levels classification of facilities wereestablished based on pedestrian flow characteristics analysis to support the scalemeasurement research. Once more, on the basis of above research, considering the functional position of each facility and different pedestrian flow characteristics,measure method of connection facilities under different service levels, measuremethod of queuing facilities based on the maximum expected queue length, as well asthe measure method of waiting facilities based on maximum gathered passengers andcomprehensive measure method of gathering and distribution facilities have beenestablished. Finally, the methods above were applied to practical engineering case andthe results were evaluated by using simulation software. The results of this paper canprovide certain reference for planning and design process of the comprehensivepassenger transport terminals.
