The Design Elements Study On Artificial Waterscape Of City Squares

City Square is an important part of urban public space. It reflects the public character and the charm of the city and also inspires the vitality of the City life. Construction of the city not only beautifies the city square environment, but also provides a chance for people to share and communicate with each other. City Square plays a significant role in relieving the tension and improving the quality of life.Artificial water features as part of the city square, on the one hand, providing beautiful environment and ecological benefits for people, making the square more decorative and practical, on the other hand, expanding the forms of square and enriching the space. Currently, artificial water features become one of the most essential projects in city square construction. Therefore, to explore suitable design methods for waterscape of China’s city square have important significance.The main part of this paper is the design elements study on artificial waterscape and the research of artificial waterscape which have been built. Based on the results of previous theoretical studies, combined with several cases, the paper systematically summarizes the design elements of artificial water features in city square:waterscape image, the relationship between waterscape and city square and the influence on people’s behaviors made by waterscape, the combination of waterscape and other landscape elements and also the ecology design of waterscape.The paper pays more attention to surveying artificial water features which have been built in the squares in Chengdu and evaluating people’s using conditions and concerning about the results of the field surveys. From the perspective of the formation of urban space, the paper analyses how to design artificial water features, the user’s satisfaction research and summarizes the impacts which produced by the artificial water features for people’s behaviors. These studies provide the basis for solving the existing problems and summering the design methods. Based on the results of the above works, the paper proposes the design points and methods, including water space image composition; water to create a city square space, how to meet the needs of human behavior and the psychology and how to use the concept of ecology and water-saving in design, will have significance in waterscape design in city squares in future.
