Gravity dam is widely used in China. Hydropower resource is rich in Southwest China and alarge number of concrete gravity dams have been built or will be started in seismically activearea. As an important water conservancy infrastructure, once problems occur in gravity damswhich will directly affect the property and life safety of people in downstream areas. To builtgravity dam in these areas,seismic stability of the dam must be considered to reach theseismic fortification target that the dam can achieve no damage in small earthquake and willnot fall in the big earthquake. The previous manual calculation is complex and error-prone,with the development of the computer and the theory of finite element, using the finiteelement software can complete the analysis of structure and get the stress, strain resultsaccurately in a relatively short period of time. This paper makes a deep study and discuss onthe dynamic characteristics and seismic safety of the concrete gravity dam under theearthquake load or the other load, the main research contents are as follows:Firstly, the development situation、seismic theory and seismic design method of concretegravity dam and concrete gravity dam was studied. The dynamic finite element analysis isdescribed in detail. Then, the dam under the condition of check water level without theseismic load is analyzed. Assessment of anti-slide stability of the dam is made by using thetwo kinds of anti-slide stability theory of shear strength and shearing strength. Decompositionresponse spectrum method and time history analysis is applied to analysis the dynamicresponse of dam under combined action of the earthquake load and other load. Comparingthese two methods some conclusion was drawn by analysis the anti-sliding stability of thedam these two. And the prospect of the next research direction was made.The research of the paper has a particularly close connection to the engineernin,and theresearch results have important reference value for the seismic design of gravity dam.Becausethe dynamic response of gravity dam under the earthquake is very comples,the analysisprocess simplified and some problems existing the dynamic analysis remains to be furtherexplored and studied.
