With the process of globalization and mark etization, the conflicts between urbanstructure, urban modernization and sustainable development ha ve becomeincreasingly serious in China under the background of rapid urbanization, whichlargely prevent the enhancement of urban general efficiency, especially to southernChina’s hilly cities with obvious regional features. Therefore, the discussion on thereasonable structure pattern of hilly cities is of important theoretical value andpractical significance to optimize the urban spatial development and the spacecombination of every internal factors and realize the sustainable development of theeco-hilly cities.This paper firstly studies on the basis of the development process of the urbanstructure at home and abroad, then summarizes the characterized factors of hilly areasthrough the studies of the characteristics of southern China’s hilly cities, constructsthe biggest characteristic of hilly cities, that is hilly small watershed unit. This paperuses the system theory to study the city’s structure elements, spatial scales andhierarchy units and it studies the coupling of hilly urban structure and smallwatershed unit based on the analysis of the effects of hilly small watershed unit onurban structure to guide the optimization and reorganization of hilly urban structureand to explore a sustainable southern China’s hilly urban structure mode.This paper consists of five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction of the whole thesis, which includes theresearch background, the research significance, the relative research development athome and abroad, the research methods and innovations a nd the research framework.The second chapter is the basic theory analysis of hilly urban structure,explaining the relevant definitions and the main theory. This chapter analyzed thedevelopment process of the urban structure at home and abroad, and put forwardprospects of the future hilly urban structure.The third chapter introduced the construction of southern China’s hilly smallwatershed unit. Through the studying of special features of southern China’s hillycities, like the characterized climate, landscape, drainage, resources and culture, itanalyzed the main characteristics of the hill’s landform so as to construct the hillysmall watershed unit. The fourth chapter demonstrates correlation analysis of hilly urban structuresystem and small watershed unit. It analyzes the hilly urban structure with the systemtheory, and it also analyzed the effects of hilly small watershed unit on urban structure,summarized the coupling of hilly urban structure and small watershed unit to guidethe construction of sustainable southern China’s hilly urban structure based on thesmall watershed unit. Then it gave a detailed analysis of the ideology of sustainabledevelopment and sustainable cities, and sums up the structural features and contentsof sustainable southern China’s hilly cities. This chapter is the core part of the paper.Finally, the paper synoptically introduces the conclusion of this paper, and putforward some related questions which need to be studied further.
