With the progress of science and technology, computer network equipment,modern Extra High Voltage (EHV) and ultra-high voltage(UHV)power transmissionand transformation is developing towards the direction of the large-scale complexsystems engineering, and the application of new technology, new voltage grade makesthe traditional way of operation and maintenance faced with new challenges, such asnumerous equipment parts and subsystems, the complex crosslinking and a hugenumber of projects in need of observation owing to components defects, etc.. We arefacing some major problems, such as how to further adapt to the new situation of thehigh voltage power grid operation, how to adopt new technologies and methods inorder to reduce the attendants’ burden of the substation maintenance, how to guaranteesafe and reliable operation of the equipment and so on. Especially in the high latitudes,due to the particularity of the environment, the requirement of equipment is more strict.Intelligent substation can automatically collect, measure, control, monitor datathrough advanced, reliable, intelligent equipment integration. It is of low carbon andenvironmentally friendly on the base of the information digitalization of the totalstation and network communication platform and the standard information sharing.Besides, it can on request support grid real-time automatic control, intelligentadjustment, on-line analysis and other advanced features, so that the substation caninteract with adjacent substations and power grid. Studies show that the operationmaintenance cost of the intelligent substation is lower than conventional transformersubstation. This reduces a lot of manpower material resources and greatly improve thelevel of power grid operation and management. Intelligent substation also occupies lessbuilding area, saving the construction quantities.At the same time, it can reduce theloss of power grid operation and energy consumption, which contributes to building aresource-conserving and environmentally friendly society. Through the equipmentcondition monitoring, the outage maintenance times and time are reduced, which improves the system reliability, safety, which is good for economy and the socialbenefit is remarkable.
