Recent social and economic development has been accompanied by a large increase inpeople’s quality of life as well as the number of domestic and international travellers. Thisincrease in tourism has promoted significant development of the hotel industry. Travellersexpectations of the natural environment, of different cultures and of comfort levels is nowof even greater significance. The hotel star rating system has been designed and developedto help satisfy these demands and rapid changes. This article provides a concise overview ofthe hotel star rating system–of hotel classifications and key characteristics as well as thescope of the system and travellers expectations. The analysis also discusses issues ofparticular to resort and spa hotels, as well as listing examples of domestic and internationalresorts and spas.The Guilin Resort and Spa Hotel in Haikou is shown to have achieved the design goalof being a natural, healthy and relaxing holiday destination. This article shows how this hasbeen achieved through the use of specific features and design elements as well as in itsprogram breakdown and room configurations.Through analysis of guest behavior, functional requirements, and spatial scales it isevident that a resort and spa hotel should have clear and definite divisions betweendifferent functions, relatively large spaces, and a range of different guest rooms andconfigurations. Each of these conditions can contribute to the creation of a natural, healthyand relaxing resort with a competitive position in the market.
