Among a multiplicity of the performance characteristics of asphalt pavement, structure depth is one of the most significant features, which reflects the pavement skid-resistance property and driving safety. With the aim of constructing a hardware system of structure depth detection and developing a software system in fast automatic detection and performance evaluation,this paper establishes the link between the image characteristics and structural depth, and analyzes the impacts of structure depth on pavement segregation and its skid-resistance property through high-performance real-time image processing algorithms. The paper firstly introducesthe design principles of the hardware detection system on road structure depth, which helps scan and output the three-dimensional texture information of the target road, then summarizes its characteristics from the3-d surface image, establishes the link model between image features and its structure depth, and finally calculates and outputs the road structure depth through the relevant algorithm. During the study, such key techniques as the auxiliary illuminant, imageacquisition and the hardware processing design are employed so as to collect the high-qualityroad images.Based on the hardware system, the image processing software of the depth detection is developed into two parts: the image data acquisition and3-d image data processing and preservation, which is mainly responsible for data acquisition, database management and maintenance, test parameters setting, real-time data graphical display, statistics and report generation. Through the operating instructions, the software system gets command of the optical parametersof the industry camera, its exposure time, linear laser operating speed and receiving and transmission of the image data, and then completes the structure depth calculation and measurement through constructing optical configuration and digital image processing technology.With experimental data repeatedly tested, this paper has been proved in the feasibility and validity of both the optical image thinning algorithm and the structure depth calculation, which can be applied to the structure depth detection system and its data analysis in other fields.
