The Fu cities, state cities and country towns are generally considered to be theaggregation of all cities differ from the capital cities in ancient China. Zhongxiang is alocal city in the middle reaches of the Han River and located in the northern part of theJianghan Plain. In different historical periods, Zhongxiang presented different urbanmorphology. Zhongxiang has been the center of Fu and state in different dynasties. Itsdevelopment of the city can be divided into four moments, construction period,developing period, mature period and modernizing period. Especially in the Ming andQing Dynasties the mature of development, Zhongxiang became the political,economic and cultural center of Hubei and Hunan province.Based on the study on the historical documents, local chronicles and field research,the study and research on the characteristics and change of Zhongxiang·s morphology ofwalls&moats and street space in Ming and Qing Dynasties has been taken. And theimportant theories about ancient cities in nowadays are taken into account. Then ananalysis on the influence factors of the changes carried out.The paper consists five chapters. The first chapter presents the major background ofthe topic, the purpose of the study, research contents, research methods, previous studiesand research framework. The second chapter states the rising and development factorssuch as the geographic, ecomomic and military aspects of Zhongxiang. Also presents thebuild history of Zhongxiang and rebuild the city into drawing based on the historicaldocuments, local chronicles and field research. Then thorough analysis is taken on theMing dynasty fence seals, the changes of middle reaches of Han River as well aselements of the ancient city of Zhongxiang. Chapter Ⅲ study the character of themorphology of walls and moats from elements such as walls, city gates and towers, Wengwalls, Tuan towers, moats and river system in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Also explore thechanges in different periods. Chapter IV analysis the street space comprehensively. Studythe plan shape features and node space characterized of the streets. ChapterⅤanalysis thefactors which lead to changes of the morphology of walls and moats and street space.After the presentation in the last four chapters, we know the ceremony ideology, city administrative level, population base, the change of Han River affect the changes.Finally, a summarize and outlook have been carried out, also exploring the impact ofurban construction and revelation in nowadays.
