Located in the southernmost part of China, separated by the sea, the city of Haikouhas seen better days since the extraordinary modern era, owing to the unique geographicalcondition and the open character of the city. Then it left us a certain heritage that effusesamorous feelings.In terms of design features, public buildings are the most representative above all else.Based on the defining of the old city district, this thesis chooses reviewing theevolvement of Haikou’s history and geography to begin with, so it can show thebackground of its formation as a whole.Meanwhile, by carrying out in-depth research around the district personally, fivepublic buildings which are considered the most classical of all have been screened out asfollow: the old Customs House, the Octagon House (now used as the Yun’s Hall), theFive-story Building (formally named the Haikou Mansion), the Daya Hotel, and theTaichanglong Hotel.Then, these five architecture cases are unscrambled one by one by means of relatingwith the sharp change of politics, economy, technology, culture, and social life at thatepoch. Thus, the architectural features of modern public building in Haikou old citydistrict can be summarized as the adaptable site selection, the conformable Arcade form,the series of patios, the flexible plane layout, and the multiple ornamentation in view ofunderstanding the intimate connection between the architectural features and the eraparticularity.In the last place, because of the consensus that special period gave birth to specialregional cultural atmosphere, so the cultural connotations lie in the appearance of thearchitectural features can be revealed out. To be specific, it means that the native cultureleads the adaptations to climatic and geographic environment, the business culture leadsthe breakthrough on urban and architectural space, and the overseas Chinese culture leadsthe tendency of structural and decorative aesthetics.
