Walking is one of the most common modes of daily travel in urban areas. However, pedestrians are the most vulnerable travelers because they are physically unprotected. Therefore, they suffer the most severe levels of trauma when they involve in the trafficaccidents. Thus, securing pedestrian safety in the crosswalks is one of the most importantgoals for improving the travel safety. The conflict between pedestrian and turning traffic isone of the most factors that results pedestrian accidents. How to optimize the pedestriancrossing traffic at signalized intersection and solve the conflict between pedestrian andturning traffic is one of the most important methods for ensuring rapid traffic running atintersection.Taking urban signalized intersection as study object, the traffic characteristics anddemand characteristics of pedestrian at signal intersection is surveyed. Analysis the mainfactors that affecting the pedestrian’s crossing speed, acceptable waiting time. The demandingsurvey showed that the main factors pedestrian considered when they crossing is the safe, andthe conflicts between pedestrian and turning traffic is one of the most factors that affectingthe safety of pedestrian at signalized intersections. To study the effects of the conflicts between pedestrian and turning traffic, the paperanalysis the relation between pedestrian’s crossing track, pedestrian delay and the accidentand conflicts, and proposed spatial separation methods and time separation methods inresolving the conflicts. Focusing on the time separation methods, analysis the problems of thetraditional pedestrian crossing signal control method, proposed the signal phase optimizationmethods based on the idea of people-oritented. To evaluate the effectiveness of these methods, two actual intersections were tested in the VISSIM environment, and vehicle delays, pedestrian delays, number of conflict points per cycle, pure time-space and parking rates werepresented to evaluate these methods. The results show that the optimization scheme caneliminate the conflicts between people and vehicle, reducing the rate of motor vehicle parkingand increasing the pedestrian through time-space resources.
