In China between 2006 and 2016,pedestrians,motorcyclists,and vehicle occupants were the most common road users who died in road traffic accidents;the percentage of mortality of these road user groups was 42%,25%,and 17%,respectively,of overall road traffic mortality.Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users and are at risk of severe consequences when they are involved in traffic accidents. The safety of pedestrians is an area of rising concern at signalized intersections.Urban signalized intersections have complex traffic flows and frequent accidents.Pedestrians are weak traffic participants, the proportion of traffic accidents involving pedestrians is high.In China, approximately 50%of accidents involving pedestrians occur at signalized intersections.China is a typical mixed traffic environment, and vehicle and pedestrian conflicts occur constantly, which seriously reduce the safety of intersections.Crossing pedestrians are often vulnerable to interactions with vehicles. These interactions sometimes lead to near-miss events called conflicts, and in the worst situations, these events may result in serious accidents. Therefore,it is necessary to conduct an in-depth investigation of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at urban signalized intersections.Aiming at evaluating the unsafe conditions at pedestrian crossings at signalized intersections in our countries, this paper studies the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles by using traffic conflict technology.First, based on data of 791 pedestrian and vehicle accidents in the main urban areas of Changsha city reported by the Changsha Traffic Police Department from 2014 to 2016,and visualized the accident geographic information, based on accident geographic information data and field surveys, six typical urban signalized intersections were selected. The peak and off-peak surveillance videos of six signalized intersections were collected, and 1,070 conflicts were extracted through manual video observation. Then, combined with the characteristics of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at the intersection,a pedestrian-vehicle conflict model was established.LPET was used as an indicator to identify the severity of conflicts.and record in detail the characteristics of pedestrian crossing behavior, vehicles and roads during the conflict;then, establishes an Ordered Probit model was established to analyze the risk factors that led to different severities of the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles. The model outcome indicates that a significant relationship between the severity level and characteristics of pedestrian behavior, vehicles and conflict. Moreover,it was identified that,in addition to the above characteristics, roadway characteristics significantly influenced pedestrian severity levels. Finally, these factors are discussed, and suggestions for improving the pedestrian traffic environment are proposed from different perspectives. |
