With the constant development of the economy of our country and the expansion offoreign trade, the port as the most important hub is becoming large-scale and specializationdevelopment gradually. Accordingly, the port crane is becoming large-scale and specialization, the demand for its working performance is higher and higher. The drum has an effect on thework efficiency of the port crane as its key spare part, so, it means higher demand for thedesign of the drums. But the traditional design method is based on empirical formula, thethickness will be thicker by this method, and its weight will be greater, not only increases thedifficulty of processing and manufacturing, but also increases cost. Many companies in orderto reduce the difficulty of manufacturing and the cost of production, to take some measures toreduce the thick of the drums, and has obtained the certain effect. But there are lack of unifiedregulations and no corresponding theoretical basis. Therefore, it is necessary to improve thetraditional design method based on the traditional method. This paper puts forward a scientificand reasonable design method that can reduce the thick; it provides the theoretical basis forthe designing of drums. This paper based on the forced deformation analysis of the material, combined withelastic-plastic theory, the thin shell theory and basic knowledge of mechanics to study thestrength and stability of drums in depth; deduced the calculation formula of critical pressureby energy method; established the model of drums to analysis with finite element softwareANSYS. Through the contrast analysis, it provide theoretical basis for the calculation ofstrength and stability checking.According to the actual stress deformation of drums, this paper established thedeformation equation and displacement expression by basic knowledge of Material mechanics. On the basis of the basic theory of elastic plastic mechanics, the paper studied about theelastic-plastic of the drums under the binding force of the wire ropes, and deduced theformula of the stress in the elastic and plastic state, put forward through the elastic and plasticlimit pressure as an important basis for the design of drums. This paper used the structure of the linear buckling theory and combined with energymethod to study the stability of the drums, and analyzed the buckling deformation of drumsunder the binding force of the wire ropes. Fully considered rope groove on the factorsinfluencing the stability of the drum, the rope grooves were simplified, deduced inertiamoment expression of rope grooves. This paper analyzed eigenvalue Buckling and nonlinear buckling using the elementsoftware ANSYS. Rope grooves were turned into rectangular beam that had the same cross -section area and the same centroid, add them into the face of the drum; and draw the curve ofanalysis results, it showed that the traditional method was conservative by combining with thecomparing of the new theory formulation with the traditional calculation method. This paper proved the traditional design calculation method of drums is veryconservative by studying and combining with the actual situation. It provided an importantreference frame for the design of the drums and promoted the application and development ofthe port crane at port.
