With the accelerated pace of China’s urbanization and a substantial increase of theurban population, the consequence has become pyramidally prominent, such asenvironmental pollution, social orders and other issues. Many a large and medium-sizedcity has started to create garden cities in recent days in order to address and improve the"urban diseases". However, researches on how to reflect national culture in garden citiesare relatively lagging behind. As a result, as the urban construction is more modernized,the national identity gets weaker. The spread of the concrete jungles gradually replacethe original coexistence in harmony between man and nature; erosion of foreign culturegradually takes the place of the spirit of traditional Chinese culture; the aggressiveexpanding of cities gradually takes over from the calm and serenity of the small towns;heavy burden of life cost residents plenty of time and leaving them not much time forcommunication.The ancient villages, which are widely distributed in China with the dual identityof settlements and heritage, carry a great deal of historical information and landscapewisdom. In terms of environmental selection, the ancient villages are located withemphasis on the layout of mountains and rivers to seek after the laws of man and naturecoexistence and prosperity. In decoration, they pay attention to local conditions and takeadvantage of bricks colors to resonate with the environment, giving them distinctregional characteristics. In light of layout, the ancient villages focus on the housingorientation to expose to sunshine and stay away from wind based on the surroundings for more natural shelter. They all reflect the affinity image of nature in the housingstructure and compound layout. In the promotion of outside exchanges, the reasonableroad network planning draws them closer to the outside world. The industrialcivilization makes the relationship between man and nature more and more estrangedand the relationship between people increasingly utilitarian. It is undoubtedly significantof the landscape wisdom in building harmonious relations between people and nature,maintaining the distinctive characteristics of the human environment and designing thelayout in line with local conditions to the construction of garden cities.By relying on the landscape wisdom of ancient villages and combining thepractical experiences of Xi’an in building garden cities, this paper attempts to be of anyuse for the construction of garden cities with Chinese characteristics by applying thelandscape wisdom of ancient villages. |
