The steering system is a special mechanism which was used to follow the driver’swill to change or recover the direction of the car’s driving. On wheeled cars, when thedriver forces on the steering wheel, which through the steering mechanism, there will be adeflection angle of the steering wheel, which is the tire is relatived to the longitudinal axisof the car. The steering performance of vehicles plays an important role in the handling andstability of vehicles, security, is one of the core technologies. The design and selection ofsteering system determine the pros and cons of a car’s steering system characteristics. Andthis design is inseparable from the steering resistance torque’s calculations, this article isfrom steering resistance torque and then research on steering characteristic. This paper hadassumed two theoretical models of the tire’s load, through above models, calculated andanalyzed the steering resistance torque under stationary and moving state, The last part is aexperiment about steering wheel in order to test the models. Through data processing,analysis and summary, arrived the conclusion:The gradient of load distribution hypothesisof tire is credible.The content of this article’s research is the basic research part of the project, which isaided by the project of Chongqing science research plan (the project number isCSTC.2009AB6021)”the research and industrialization of the key technology of electricpower steering system” and discussing the steering resistance torque which is the basic partof the steering system. The main contents include:1. The development and the work’s principle of the existed vehicle steering system isintroduced. The present of the research situation and the development trend of the steeringsystem both at home and abroad are analyzed. The existing compute mode for steeringresistance torque and the influence of the steering resistance torque are analyzed and thelimitations of the existing compute modes are studied. The limitations of the existingcalculation method were discovered.2. From the point between the ground and the steering wheel, the second partassumed two models of the load of the tire, took car’s parameter in the models, throughthe MATLAB, there are a number of the graph curve, consulting the realistic test datadocuments, proposed the tire load’s gradient-distribution theory.3.When the car is driving,the steering torque are by comparison. I used MATLAB to draw different curves, confirmed the gradient load distribution theory of tire.4. The research object are test cars and steering characteristics test were underway.Choosing different cars, whose steering system must be pure mechanical, at different roadssuch as the dirt roads, highways, gravel road and different pressure to obtain Characteristiccurve of steering wheel’s torque and its angle. At last, the paper reached the steeringcharacteristic conclusions5. Tooking the test car’s basic parameters of the steering system in the model,analysising the test data and writing the test report are finished. At last the paper comparedthe differences. The paper is summaried and put forward the prospects.
