With the rapid development of social economy and the continuous progress ofautomobile manufacturing industry, the urbanization process of China has been remarkablyaccelerated. However, the continuous increasing of all kinds of vehicles leads to the rapidgrowth of traffic demand in urban area. With the rapid development of the city traffic, a seriesof inevitable problems are also brought in, such as traffic jam, traffic delay, traffic accident,traffic pollution and so on. As the meeting-point of roads, the intersections play an extremelyimportant role in the road network and traffic flow. What’s more, the traffic problemsmentioned above are also reflected mainly at the intersections, so that it is essential to makein-depth study on the methods of signal control at the intersections.This paper mainly carries on the following research:Firstly, this paper illustrates the research status of urban traffic signal control andQueuing Theory at home or abroad.Secondly, it analyzes Queuing Theory, Markov Chain, Summation Curve, Shock WaveTheory, Two-fluid Theory and other common Queuing theories. By comparing these theories,Two-fluid Theory is proved to be the best one to reflect the actual situation of queue.Two-fluid Theory is regarded as theoretical basis in this paper and tested by VISSIMsimulation software.Thirdly, it lists several common methods of traffic signal control. By comparing thesemethods, it refers to a fuzzy control method of multiphase intersection. And then thequeuing length which was calculated by equivalent queue model in Chapter2is regarded asthe input parameter of fuzzy controller designs four phasic fuzzy controller. It can controlsignal system according to real-time traffic flow.At last, this paper takes intersections of Lanzhou city as a typical example, andsimulating the active and improvement project. By mean of comparing simulation data, thispaper draws a better conclusion of fuzzy control.
