The controlling of railway sand disaster is playing an important role in controllingdesertification in China. In the past50years,since the Baotou—Lanzhou railway had beenconstructed, there are very outstanding railway sand damage controlling example both in thesemi-arid area or in arid regions. A lot of research had been done on sand flow movement ruleand sand disaster prevention along the railway going through the desert sand, the constructionof controlling system along Tarim desert highway in extreme arid area, the establishment ofSha-potou "five in one" sand prevention system in arid area and the study on preventionsystem of Yu men section belonged Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway in Gobi have maderemarkable achievements. scientific research staff had done much on the overall desert sanddamage controlling, but relates to the control of railway sand disaster is discussed seldom ingeneral, water and heat conditions, topography, landform, vegetation and soil condition isdifferent from the desert and Gobi region. When the railway acrosses the sand, the sandprevetion measures are also different from the desert and Gobi region.TheTaiyuan-Zhongwei-Yinchuan railway acrosses the southern edge of Mao Wu su sandy land,there are fixed sand dunes, semi fixed sand dunes and the sand on both sides of the railway,sand dune, sand distributes in part of the railway section, when the sand flow wind season iscoming, wind erosion and sand burying is a great threat to the line. On the basic ofinvestigation, we found that, there were13parts distributing in tai-zhong line needing to betaken preventive measures (sand disaster),9parts distributing in ding–yin line needing to betaken preventive measures (sand disaster),which the part of railway is managed by LanzhouRailway Bureau.the sand disaster seriously affect traffic safety, needed to study protectivemeasures to ensure the safe operation of the railway.Based on the sand control practice of Taizhongyin Railway acrossing the southern edgeof Mao Wu su sandy land, The natural environmental characteristics,sandy disasterdistribution,sandy disaster types,sandy disaster causes,hazards sitution,sand damagecharacteristics of Taizhong yin Railway,which goes through the south of Mao Wu Susand,was investigated and researched;through the analysis of the domestic existing railwaysand-control system, combing with the sand harm characteristics along theTaiyuan-Zhongwei-Yinchuan railway and considering the different sections of the terrain,topography, and climate conditions, vegetation conditions, soil conditions, according to suitone’s measures to local conditions, fortification to harm, obtain raw material locally,economic and reasonable, effective principle, combing with the local wind flow results, establishing a single engineering stabilization system, a single sand-fixing system by plants,engineering stabilization measures and sand-fixing plants measures combined, as well asmuch resistance near the solid, solid resistance, combing with engineering measures and plantmeasures comprehensively to control sand disaster system and economic crop farmlandpreventing sand damage system along the railway.According to the characteristics of sand disaster along Taiyuan-Zhongwei-Yinchuanrailway, establishing the basic principles and effective sand control measures, through fieldinvestigation and field survey, the sand flow characteristics of typical section of TaizhongyinRailway acrossing the southern of Mu Us Sandland were studied,the variation of watercontent in sand, the speed change of sand dune movement, the changes of wind speed androughness near-surface, sediment transport rate and the changes of vegetation growthsituation were studied respectively from the measures carried out before and after,the controlmeasures on the sand were analyzed, which can provide a basis for the design of the sametype of sandy areas, which highway and railway will across.
