Sustainable development has risen to national and even global strategic consensus to deal with the contradictions between the economy, energy and the environment. In recent years, the quality of the atmospheric environment in northern cities in China has been poor, and the state has issued a series of policies and action guidelines for improving the atmospheric environment and actively promote the coal-fired clean energy replacement project represented by“coal to electricity”and gradually ban the construction and use of small coal-fired boilers. In the transportation field, many railway stations along the railway mainly rely on self-use boiler and chillers to provide heat and cold sources. The railway industry has a large amount of energy demand, but in this way the energy utilization efficiency is low, energy consumption is large, and even lead to more serious environmental problems. The railway department responded to the national call and actively participated in the air pollution control action. The low temperature air source heat pump technology and the ground source heat pump technology are the recommended forms of cold and heat sources in the“coal to electricity”project.Air source heat pump and ground source heat pump are sustainable energy sources, which are environmentally friendly, energy efficient and so on.This paper discusses the adaptability of low temperature air source heat pump and ground source heat pump technology along the northern railway, and discusses the energy efficiency and environmental economic performance of different forms of cold and heat sources.First, this paper discusses the adaptability of low temperature air source heat pump and ground source heat pump technology along Taiyuan-Zhongwei(Yinchuan)Railway.Based on the local meteorological changes in the whole year, the annual energy efficiency of the air source heat pump in the typical station of Taiyuan-Zhongwei(Yinchuan)Railway and the time distribution of the easy frosting area were analyzed. The easy frosting time of Yinchuan Station and Dingbian Station accounted for 33%and 23%of the heating time in winter, respectively.Combined with the architectural characteristics along the railway and the distribution of local geothermal resources, the adaptability of the ground source heat pump technology was analyzed along the railway. Results show that the geothermal resources along the Ningxia section of Taiyuan-Zhongwei(Yinchuan)Railway are abundant. Most of the areas along the Yinchuan-Dingbian-Zhongwei line are suitable areas for ground source heat pumps. Then, taking the station building project along Ningxia section of Taiyuan-Zhongwei(Yinchuan)Railway:Yinchuan-Dingbian–Zhongwei as the research object, the analysis of the heating and cooling load of the station of Dingbian along the railway was carried out,and the different cold and heat source schemes were compared. On the whole, the low-temperature air source heat pump scheme has the highest initial cost and annual operating cost.Although the initial investment of the ground source heat pump is slightly higher than the conventional scheme, the operating cost is the lowest. Finally, the benefits brought by the application of the ground source heat pump to the station buildings along the railway were analyzed. There are 19 railway stations in the Ningxia section of the Taiyuan-Zhongwei(Yinchuan)Railway.If a ground source heat pump system is used instead of a coal-fired boiler,a heating period is used as a calculation cycle, the ground source heat pump heat source scheme can reduce the use of coal by 2591tons compared with the conventional heat source scheme, which can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 10074 tons,SO2110t,nitrogen oxides by 147 tons, and dust by 73 tons.
