As a new type of transportation, metro has received increasing public recognitionattributing to its safe, comfortable, convenient, and fast characteristics. Metro can notonly save limited land resources on the ground, but also improve the traffic conditions, thus can be seen as a guarantee for China’s comprehensive and sustainabledevelopment. There are currently31cities in China having built or been buildingmetros, and it is safe to say China has already stepped into “Metro Era”. As thedevelopment of metro industry and construction, its function is far from a merepassenger’s carrier, but boasts a kind of culture and presents a cultural brand as well asa geographical characteristic of an area.Metro station entrance is an essential link between on-the-ground surface andinterior space of the metro station, and is the starting point for passengers’ impressionand experience, thus the quality of entrance design undertakes direct impact on thepassengers’ view towards the metro or even the whole city. Ventilation pavilion is anair exchange port connecting station interior to outside space, therefore researches onits rationality are conducive to the optimal implementation of its functions. In addition,as the same as metro entrance, pavilion is an actual architectural manifestation on theground of underground metro construction, thus an artistic, scientific and practicalpavilion design will undoubtedly add attractions to the whole metro.Researches on metro entrance and pavilion design are of great academic andrealistic significance, however, in view of current collected data, domestic researchesmainly concentrate on the subway line construction and architectural discussion, andrelevant landscape design researches are in deficiency. Besides, as Xi’an subway line2is newly completed and just open to the public, its relevant researches are confined tosmall numbers. At this point, the thesis investigates metro situations in China’s major cities byadopting an empirical approach, and makes a case study of XING ZHENG ZHONGXIN Station, ZHONGLOU Station, and SHENGTIYUCHANG Station for Xi’an subway line2based on excessive material readings and field researches. Based on thesummary and induction of landscape features on major domestic cities, the thesisinvestigates the listed three metro stations, puts forwards their virtues and defects, andattempts to propose a solution. The thesis mainly comes up with the following conclusions: first, the position, number, appearance, and materials of metro station entrance and ventilation pavilionare based on the wide field investigations and should be taken specific natural andhumane factors into consideration. Its regulation and planning should adapt to localconditions; second, the entrances and pavilions of XING ZHENG ZHONG XINStation, ZHONGLOU Station, and SHENGTIYUCHANG Station for Xi’an subwayline2are proper and rational in number setting, position selection, scale determination, and material adoption. Actual situation around the station is taken into account andcertain cultural and humane features are presented. However, there are still someproblems widely existing in the listed three stations, such as monotony architecturalforms of pavilion, insufficiency of green plants, and inharmonious match withsurroundings. As the first and also the only completed subway line in Xi’an, its feature studieson landscape design possess reference value to other metro constructions in the city. The author expects that the problems found by the thesis would be considered duringthe construction of other subway lines and the thesis could make a contribution toXi’an metro construction.
