Research On Development Of Architectures Wrapped In Metal In Contemporary China

As highly expressive form,architectures wrapped in metal has a long history and widerange of practices in developed regions,such as Europe,the United States andJapan.However,this skin form is now at the stage of exploration in contemporary China.Overthe last decade,especially after2008, with foreign architects’ practices in our country,newdesign strategies and technologies are introduced and architectures wrapped in metalfrequently appeared in varieties of practice,from airports,convention centers,stadiums andothe large public buildings,to clubhouses,sales offices,tee rooms and other small spacebuildings.Many of them are excellent architectural prctices,but there are also some cases offailure.Research on the status and development trend of the architectures wrapped in metal ofcontemporary China is still blank,therefore the study of this topic is of great significance forthe development of architectures wrapped in metal in China.The object of this thesis is the practice of architectures wrapped in metal incontemporary China.Through a large quantity of site investigation and literature sorting,Isummarized the tectonic elements and expressive strategy of architectures wrapped in metalof China,and explore the problems and solutions of these practices.Finallly summarizeddesign strategies and development tendency of architectures wrapped in metal,serving as aguide for future practice.This paper is divided into the following four parts:The first part:(chapter1) for the introduction, this part expounds the object of thisthesis architectures wrapped in metal,then elaborate research status,significance,methodsand framework of this paper, laying the foundation for the study.Part2:(chapter2) the second chapter systematically elaborated the basic knowledge ofthe study object,including the characteristic,type,advantages and disadvantages of metallicmaterials,as well as stages of metal skins’ development.Part3:(chapter3~5) is the main part of this thesis, design practices and strategies areanalyzed parallelly. First of all, three tectonic elements of metal skins are extracted,includingmaterial,structure and construction.Then chapter4inquiry into the expression of this specialskin form separately from the transparent, bright, nonlinear, time etc.Chapter5affirms thepractices of this skin form, at the same time, discusses the material defects, connection failure,impact of environmental conditions of architectures wrapped in metal and givescorresponding solutions.Part4:(chapter6) Prospects and design strategy for architectures wrapped in metal.The development tendency of metal skin is mainly summarized from Material diversification,parameterization, media, ecological type, geographical type, emotion type etc,andrespectively extended its design strategy.
